Doubleclick.net - Do you block it?

I have a 7meg up and down for my school of 400 users. Upgrading isn't an option for at least another year or two so I'm really trying to only allow traffic that's crucial. Doubleclick takes a constant 2-3% of the bandwidth. Any advantage of blocking it or would it break google's functionality?

I have ad.doubleclick.net blocked and it doesn't cause any issues. Only thing is it blocks the ad banner on the YouTube page which embeds a block screen within YouTube so if you don't look properly it looks like YouTube is blocked!

If you use a program like adblocker, does that stop adverts from loading completely or just blocks the code once it's loaded? just a thought.

We block it with no side effects other than the occasional user asking what the blocked component on the page might be.

As an aside - we are seeing an exponential growth in traffic to ad and analytics sites with the introduction of ipads into the school. At present not a huge amount of actual bandwidth but a HUGE number of individual requests going through the proxy server.

If you add ad.doubleclick.net to the URL Blacklist policy in Google Chrome the request won't even hit your proxy server.

Adblockers in Chrome and Firefox stop adverts from loading completely.

IIRC it breaks Google Shopping links, but that's not a huge issue.

Just looked at ours for last month and there was about 25,000 requests. Interested to hear what yours is?
