Gatt Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 So I've been having a brief wander round the new OS and so far a few things of note beside the Start menu: A few new Icons : A prominent shadow effect under active windows and dialog boxes Window Borders are gone Clicking on a taskbar icon for an app thats on a Virtual Desktop automatically shifts to the appropriate desktop that the app is on One feature that appears to be lacking is moving windows to a Virtual Desktop - though I may be missing it! 1

Gatt Posted October 2, 2014 Author Posted October 2, 2014 if you think that's strange try server it has something called canary network diagnostics That will be for the invalid canaries then
sted Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 That will be for the invalid canaries then perhaps it to check miners (minors) internet usage

LosOjos Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 One feature that appears to be lacking is moving windows to a Virtual Desktop - though I may be missing it! Nothing in the window chrome but the keyboard shortcuts have been extended - Ctrl + Win + [Left/Right] will move a window to another desktop
mrbios Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 How exactly do you move an item from one virtual desktop to another? I currently seem to be able to switch between virtual desktops, but if i open anything new it instantly takes me back to the original and opens it there..... Ctrl + win + left/right switches between virtual desktops, but doesn't help me take active windows from one to the other
Gatt Posted October 2, 2014 Author Posted October 2, 2014 you have to close the item, move to the desired Virtual Desktop (or TaskView) and then reopen the app....

There's definitely a KB shortcut, I did it last night... try SHIFT + WIN + Left/Right maybe?

Arthur Posted October 2, 2014 Posted October 2, 2014 A few more new things... What's new in Windows 10 Group Policy New PowerShell cmdlets Active Memory Dump 10 new icons (which to me look like they were taken from one of Microsoft's Visio stencils ).
LosOjos Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 There's definitely a KB shortcut, I did it last night... try SHIFT + WIN + Left/Right maybe? Nope, no shortcut Could have sworn I'd done it but must have just switched desktops.
tmcd35 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 So far I'm quietly impressed. Using it in place of Win7Pro as my work desktop. So far in day to day use it's hard to see the difference. Star button and menu looks a bit different is as much as I can say, oh and the login screen is from Win8. It's domain joined. All my programs, so far, work (yes inc. SIMS), and folder redirection worked for my desktop. Picked up my Win7 profile settings just fine. No complaints at all. So far.
Gatt Posted October 3, 2014 Author Posted October 3, 2014 I've managed to get it installed on the domain and unpinned all the live tiles from the Start menu so looks a lot more like Win7 now
JRowley Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I think they should change the 'All Apps' button so that it opens the list on the right hand side, like the File Explorer menu. Would make the start menu a bit more uniform, at the moment you have the sort of favourite/most used lists, tiles, file explorer menu and the all apps menu that all display things in different ways.
Oaktech Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 My main issue at the moment is the inability to work out how to remove the search button from the taskbar as it seems to a) be a bit pointless when there is one in the start menu and one in every explorer window b) crashes on both hardware configs i've tried it on so far.

There has been alot of feedback to say the search button is pointless as the start menu does the same thing, so I expect it will be removed in a coming build. Edit: Sorry wasn't very clear on the context. Edited October 3, 2014 by JRowley 1

JRowley Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 What is it's? I hope they don't remove the new start bar o.o Sorry the search button, wasn't clear! The server preview doesn't even include this button, so I can't see a valid reason for keeping it.
Oaktech Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 What is it's? I hope they don't remove the new start bar o.o it's = the taskbar search facility.
tmcd35 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Just had a quick play around with virtual desktops. Pretty good. I like the fact that you can switch between programs on different desktops using the taskbar. Moving apps between desktops is very clunky. You need to go into switch desktop view using the taskbar button then use a context menu on the thumbnail of the program to get the move option. Just about every other virtual desktop implementation allows you to drag and drop the thumbnail to the required desktop. On another note the button to minimise all open windows and show the desktop is still there - but hidden! Also going for it risks bringing up the dreaded charms bar since it's hot square activation is in the same area of the screen.

Edit: Sorry wasn't very clear on the context. Ive noticed we cannot turn off the search in Turn Windows features on or off like we used to be able to do in windows 7 unless im missing something.

timbo343 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I hope they bring back the "your password will expires in x number of days". I miss this feature however we do have a script that runs on windows 7 at the moment.
