been playing round removing apps i dont want (so bing news etc) to see if its the same as win8.1 (it is) and theres an appx called cortana dosent seem to do anything or have any links but it does appear to be there. On the plus side it seems if i remove them as administrator it takes them away from other users even if they have previously logged on which iirc wasnt the case on 8.1

 

also noticed on server 10 there is a group called cloneable domain controllers

Isn't Cortana on pretty much all windows phone 8 as a major update they did not too long back? I'm not sure because I haven't had a windows phone since WP7.

Cortana is a Windows Phone 8.1 feature which is effectively Apple's Siri rebranded and powered by Bing, so naturally it's useless (Not that Siri is much better mind you). It seems they are planning on integrating it into Windows 10, which makes sense as it will be the same operating system on all devices.

I think I could use it on my PC, Commands like "pause music" could be pretty handy. When I have lots of windows open and get flustered i'd like to just say "Windows, pause music" or something similar. But for it to be any use at all it would have to be always listening. If I have to push a button to make it listen, what's the point in it?

It's not really suited to PC, not everyone has a microphone plugged in for starters and as you say unless it's always on, which isn't the way it works on Windows Phone it would be a bit of an inconvenience. It's just due to the One OS model they are going for, it will be useful on Xbox One, Windows Phone, Tablets and Smart TVs if they ever go that route.

I was half expecting this thanks to the Xbox One and Kinnect, I wonder what the default setting will be for that, on or off and what the battery life impact will be. Regardless for PC it's still entirely useless unless you have a microphone, I guess we will have to wait and see in spring what they will do with it.

you can control media player etc with voice from at least windows 7 if not xp mce ive set up and used it a few times and unless you have a speccific need its absolutely pointless its called windows speech recognition on the win7 box im on now (no microphone) kinnect was useful in games on my xbox one till it stopped working and ive had to send the camera back was v handy in forza horizon for setting waypoints without having to use the map or stop driving

Oh no I know Speech Recognition and controls have been in for a long time, but Cortana isn't just that thanks to the Bing integration, so unless they do something extremely useful or interesting with it then I see no reason for people to go out and buy a microphone for it.

Yeah I said in an earlier post that it would be useful on other platforms, just not PC/Desktop.
