VGA Cables. Is there a difference?

If we have SXGA capable projectors does it matter what VGA cable you use to connect it to a PC? From what I understand VGA is a term for the cable which covers VGA,XGA,SXGA, WXGA etc. Is a standard VGA cable that comes with a PC capable of all the resolutions? Our cables have been in for a good number of years (4/5 years) but our projectors are brand new. Some cables are causing shadowing so I thought of replacing the cables but does it make a difference what type of cable I replace it with?

Yes, the cables are all near identical but like many other cables, quality can differ. A decent quality VGA cable from the days of 14" VGA monitors will still display full HD.

We are displaying at SXGA (1280 x 1024) . I have seen lots of cables ranging from £5.99 to £50 for a 5 metre cable.

 

Anyone able to recommend a decent cable make?

I've had issues with cheap cables that were ghosting. Shielded cables are supposed to prevent this but sometimes the end connections don't connect properly so you have to 'tap' them or fiddle to remove the ghost.

Cheap and nasty ones (usually with thin, flimsy cable) can give really poor image quality on longer runs - ghosting and timing off with the image sitting off the edge of the screen and so on.

I would suggest always buying VGA cables with all 15 pins connected and with ferrites over the cables.

The more shielding you can get the better.

Are these things listed in the descriptions when buying?

I have just seen these C2G 5m HD15 M/M Sxga Monitor Cable (81088) - www.misco.co.uk but it doesn't say all 15 pins connected or ferrites.

if it doesn't say it then it wont be there.

Plus you can see there are only 14 pins in the picture.

ferrites are the black lumps on the cables just before the plugs, so if there is a picture of the cable you will see them.

I normally get my vga cables from Kenable, they do PO orders and are happy to give advice on cabling, even offering cheaper cables if they think they are more suited to the job.

Generally speaking, the shorter the cable, the worse the quality can be and still get away with it!

 

A 1m cable that come free with a projector is probably alright in most circumstances, when you start getting into 20m+ cables for projector plates it gets important.
