Any audio mixing desk experts able to help?

Hi,

 

A number of years ago we had a new drama studio built with all the mod-cons, including quite a large audio mixing desk. In the summer for the first time we (as techies) needed to hook a computer to it and found that we were only getting single channel audio. The guy in change of it (now retired) couldn't sort it but we'd like to try to sort it if we can. The symptoms we have are, that we can connect a stereo audio source (any source) to the desk on any pair of L and R channels, but get only RHS audio. Interestingly the desk has an LED VU meter built in, which only shows a single channel's audio, so my mind confirming that its either a fault for a wrong setting somewhere on the desk.

 

To be clear, its not 'mono-ising' the signal, using a stereo checker app (which plays 'left channel', 'right channel' on the appropriate channel) and plugging the phone in as an audio source, I could confirm we just get the RHS audio channel. Obviously when I switch the L and R on the input from the phone, I just get the left audio.

 

Any ideas that we can try to diagnose the issue?

What make and model is the desk?

 

Have you tried connecting each output from your stereo source to a mono channel and panning these Left and Right?

If you plug a normal microphone in to one of the mic inputs, are you able to pan left and right to confirm that the left and right speakers/amp channels are working and they're wired up correctly?

Tell me what make/model it is and I might be able to help you... If it's an Allen and Heath, you might get them to help you as they are in Cornwall too!

Sounds silly but have you tried a different cable? You might have a problem with the cable.

I've got a mixer with a similar problem - no output on one of the XLR channels. I suspect a dry joint on the XLR out socket as the mixer is operating in stereo for all output apart from the XLR. Can you check the Alt 3/4 outputs, headphone and unbalanced output sockets? If these work, it's a single socket fault.
