Warm sunshine, almost zero wind and the planes were taking off from Blackpool airport behind us so we got to see them up close too! A lot nicer and stress free than getting into and out of Southport (not to mention it saved us £50! Fish and chps for tea And I took this pic. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight with the guest Lancaster from Canada too. The pic was taken looking over the Ribble estury over Liverpool Bay and you can see Snowdonia in the background! XiJ Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Me and my brother went up to derwent valley to watch them fly over the dams. We didn't set off until late but just managed to get to the top of a hill to see them fly down. We didn't quite see them over the dams but when the banked, turned towards us and throttled up it was brilliant We heard them come back and the second pass was much lower!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 We gave it a miss this year. It's usually a really good day out, but you've got to get there early enough to get a parking spot along marine drive. Gutted I missed the lancasters though!
Andrew_C Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I went to Bournemouth to see them, and the Vulcan, I too stopped a few miles out due to the traffic. I've seen estimates that 1.5m people went over the 4 days. Bit disappointed that only one of the Lancasters made it due to technical difficulties. The Vulcan was stunning, but they were treating the engines gently. Not the noise I remember having seen a full power take-off at Farnborough many years ago. 1st prize for noise was the new Typhoon.
witch Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 The Lancasters were due at Bournemouth Air Show but the Canadian one (Vera, I believe) broke down. But they came back to Hurn airport a couple of weeks ago and this time it was the British one that failed - we were peering through the chainlink and saw Vera taxi and take off which was special. The Canberra and the two Hunters were with them
Linfit Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Working in garden yesterday afternoon and hear the distinctive noise from over the moors - look up to see two spitfires in loose formation flying over, across the valley, over Blackstone Edge and off towards Derbyshire. Awesome. Half an hour later, that thrumming noise again, and bugger me - TWO Lancs, right over my house, flying in formation maybe 200 m apart, straight over, again over the ridge of the Pennines: presumably on their way from Southport to Derwent. Astonishing - absolutely made my summer. I was standing there on the lawn for a good five minutes after they had gone just stunned that I'd seen them.

SteveBentley Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 Ah, I wondered if it was this weekend, I saw some aircraft in formation fly over the M61 as I was heading to Preston. Been a few times, usually a really stressful journey because the sat-nav can't cope with the road closures and I don't have any local knowledge whatsoever.

Andrew_C Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 As I wrote above, they seem to be treating it with a bit of respect now, as befits an old lady. This years display was MUCH quieter than the Typhoon. I saw a Vulcan full power take-off at Farnborough in the late 70s.
