It means that people without any proper knowledge of teaching are creating terms to introduce ideas that they think are good into the classroom without thinking it through properly.

Computers in locked metal boxes

TFTs in polycarbonate protective sleeves, bolted to the desk.

Titanium coated desks for robustness.

Everything screwed down tight

Fixed, bolted, metal seating (grid wiring optional with "shock" button)

Tiled walls for easy cleaning.

Tiled floors for the same reason

Autolocking timed doors with no teacher disable function

GSM jammers to stop the kiddies phones.

Automated building controls for lights/heating/aircon etc totally removing the teacher from control.

 

That might be a good start..heh..

We have one, or at least that is what it is supposed to be.

 

A two storey building with a mezzanine floor, floor to ceiling glass walls east & west. Intended for music & performing arts. The mezzanine floor has a balcony with stainless steel handrail that would look good on a luxury cruise liner.

 

It has some issues:

 

During late Autumn and early Spring, when the sun is low in the sky in the morning/afternoon, the sunlight blinds you, and renders the IWB useless for most of the day;

Light fittings that need a cherry-picker to change a bulb;

802.11b WAPs that have never worked and would also need a cherry-picker to take them down to reconfigure;

Under-floor heating that takes 2-3 days to heat up & cool down;

No opening windows and limited ventilation;

A narrow steel spiral staircase to the mezzanine floor plus a lift that works intermittently;

Acoustically it is like a barn, although there are two teaching spaces, only one can be used at a time because of the noise.

It has a recording studio, with no sound insulation, plus an extractor fan to add ambient sound....

It has a suite of wireless MAC G5 tower systems on the mezzanine floor that were locked in unventilated under-desk cupboards until I took the doors off when they started cooking.... and cabled them up using CAT5e.....

 

I look forward to seeing what a 21st century school brings......

Sounds like there will be a resurgence in need for ICT technicians in a few years if that's the sorta thing that's going on. And after we've all left due to being Tuped, we'll be able to demand higher pay too :p
