MattDLEA Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I know a few of you on here look after a few different schools. Just wondered firstly how you look after them if your off site. I have used logmein in the past when it was free. But have not set up anything for support after it went paid for. Ideally I would like something that I can remote onto a PC in school ( then I can Remote desktop on to the server) from that PC ( I take it thats a little bit safer then remoting straight on to the server from outside?) Not essential but maybe something I could use from my iphone, as the backend of the week I'm not normally near a computer. Cheers
CyberDrac Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 We have a Smoothwall and so can VPN in provided that is all working, and once in we can Remote Desktop onto anything we need to.
Quackers Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 We have a private ethernet circuit to each site we support, and our core router lets me go where ever i want.
korifugi Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 We use Teamviewer - we have it set up on the servers for the various sites, to allow remote admin work and we have the link for the "quick and dirty" client on our helpdesk - so we can dive in at a users behest and remotely assist.
Sam_Brown Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Bog standard VPN through Server 2008. Staff laptops can connect using a shortcut and once in it's like they are at work. For staff with other devices we have Ericom which has an HTML5 client so can run on iPAD with no issues.
MordyT Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 VPN mostly. But take a look at remote utilities - free for commercial use (up to 10 PCs)
TheScarfedOne Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 VPN and RDP was my preferred before leaving schools. Now, a variety of teamview, rdp...
zag Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Simple RDP, forwarded using smoothwall to a hidden port.
mats Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Was logmein until they wanted money. Now RDP over a ssh tunnel. SSH runs on a firewalled Linux VM (port 22 only) with key authentication and which updates itself whenever a security advisory comes out. Only certain users allowed to connect (me).
edutech4schools Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Staff use remote desktop gateway but I use TeamViewer as its a one off fee. The reason I do not use RD is I am self-employed and a) wanted to keep things separate and b) have the access policy set to domain joined laptops ony and I do not have a schools laptop just my own one.
