Hello,

I'm looking for a bit of easy to use software to help record jobs.

We use spiceworks for ticketing, but I want this more as just a personal record of jobs for managing our team.

I want to have multiple instances of this software open at once, all connected to the same file of course and be able to input staff names, departments, comments etc.

If anyone knows of any (preferably not web-based?) please post away!

Why are you particularly opposed to web based?

In order to have the software open on multiple machines, writing back to the same file/DB, you'll need that file/DB to be on a server so most solutions you'll find will have a web front end I'd imagine...

Personally I use Liberum, but that's web based.

Nothing particularly against web software, I just enjoy having an actual application to manage all of this?

OK, well I personally can't see the benefit of an EXE over a website but rather than get in to that...

How about Access? Split the front end and back end, put the back end on a shared drive, copy the front end to whichever machine needs to run it.

You'll have to design it yourself, and if you want to change anything you'll have to remember to update all the machines (a downfall to a program rather than web, but not getting in to that :p) but at least it gives you total control :)

It's an idea - and I have done databases in the past like this, but I was never smart enough to work out how to make them work across multiple machines simultaneously!

To be fair, it's fairly simple in Access. In 2007 onwards, there's an "Export to Access" option which will let you spit the tables out to a new Access file. You put that on a share, then with your front end (all your forms for data entry and any reports you want to run on it) you create a linked table simply by doing an "Import from Access" and choosing the "linked table" option (this is from memory, the wording may be slightly different but the concept's the same). Then copy the front end Access file to whichever machine you want.

It's not hugely scalable but if it's just for a small team of techies to keep track of things, it can be easier and quicker to get going than installing an SQL instance.

Oh I see! Fair enough!

I don't suppose you have any examples or anything at all?

I was after something like this a few weeks ago, i found one that fitted our needs 100% but was not free, but was very cheap. ToDo Cloud. Its subscription but only $1.99 a month per user so pence really. They have a client for iPad, iPhone, Mac and Android, but not Windows so you would have to use the web browser version for that but the web client is good too. I know you said freeware but nothing has come close to what we wanted compared to this and its so cheap. Plus there is a 14 day full trial.

We all have iPhones, iPads and Macs so we are able to update the jobs on every device we use on the go or at our desks. Really like it.

Any screenshots? (No demo online)

I can't screenshot mine for obvious reasons but if you google image search manageengine servicedesk you'll see some. It's web based, you install the package on your server and it sorts itself. Takes a bit of configuring but it's a nice interface and it will take e-mail jobs and you can just log into it from any room in school. allows multiple technicians and works with AD

Afraid not, I use Liberum myself, but there's a template in Access 2007 (and I'd bet it's available in any version after that too) called "Issues & Tasks" which should get you damn close :)

If you're wanting the AD integration then i think it's going to have to be a "web" based program as you're going to need staff to be able to access it at all times to be able to log jobs with you. I think that the manageengine servicedesk might fit what you're after. It's an exe that installs to a server and then you access it through a web browser. It emails you with tickets, allows single sign on(although i never got that bit working) with AD to log jobs and also will allow ticket creation via e-mail. IT allows you multiple techs and administrators and can auto assign jobs based on the content of the ticket.
