Change Analogue Telephone To Digital

We have an analogue telephone connected to our NEC system within school which has another 6 Digital phones connected to it.

 

We are wanting to change the analogue phone to a digital phone. We have been told that all we need to do is change what cables are plugged into the pace plate on the wall then plug in the new digital phone and the phone should power on.

 

Could someone help us on what cables we need to plug into where to make the phone digital.

Also does anything need changing on the NEC system which is the master box.

I could be missing something here, but from what you describe it sounds like you have an analog ext from a telephone system, going yo a set of six digital cordless phones?

 

Can you tell us what you are wanting to achieve by changing the phones so we can understand what you are looking at?

sounds like you may need 6 digital ports adding to the phone system, it's unlikely that you can split a digital port.

Well should be fairly easy to check - patch one of the working digital lines into the socket you're interested in and plug the working digital phone in - if it works - you know the cabling isn't going to be a problem and you can put the working phone back as it was and cable up the new digital. If the new one doesn't work - you'll need to look at the phone system or phone configuration...

If it's anything like the old Panasonic systems then there are 2 extra cables connected on a digital extension, analogue normal phone uses 2, digital one uses 4. You'd need to find the install manual for that system to find out what extras you would need, or look at wiring for the other digital extensions.

I'd ask whoever told you that all you need to do is change some cable to come in and sort it out for you as it sounds like they know the system?

If it's like the Avaya IP Office systems then I'm pretty sure the statement is correct - although our IP Office has 6 analogue lines used for faxes etc, I'm reasonably sure we have some regular handsets (such as a pair of DECTs from Argos) just plugged into digital extensions - the UI tells you whether it's analogue or digital on the end of it. Thus swapping an analogue phone for a digital one would be a simple unplug/replug as you've been told.

We had a Siemens phone system which had about 100 analogue ports on it, plus a card that that gave it 8 digital ports. The latter were used for reception phones and had some additional functionality - and most importantly they needed digital handsets.

 

Both types of phones used standard copper cables and RJ11 telephone points but they can't be interchanged I.e. you can't put a digital phone on an analogue port and vice versa. If you need additional digital lines then you will probably need to add an additional card to your phone system and get some to fit and program it.

 

We have an Avaya system now that uses IP handsets and does have a number of analogue ports but I suspect this is not the type of system you have.

What model NEC is it? They are usually card based systems, and will need a corresponding digital port in the cabinet. We have just ripped one out, and I taught myself how to program it(and have a room full of phones, cards, cabs etc!)
