Exchange 2010 Backup

Hello

 

Having recently taken over at this sight I am planning a migration away from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 (not 2013 because the last network manager already left licensing and a virtual server good to go for 2010).

 

Our Exchange 2003 server is currently backed up by an outdated add on for Acronis but seeing as I have been using it thought I would get a price for its modern incarnation to put on the virtual server and was quoted £2000.

 

So my question is what is everybody else using to backup their Exchange servers?

 

Note: the current backup gets stored to a NAS and I would prefer to continue this.

We just user Windows Server Backup - couldn't be much simpler - we make it backup to a remote network share which we then backup.

The company I have coming in to do the migration recommended Symantec with Exchange Agent, any thoughts on this?

 

What level of recovery does using Windows Server Backup provide, are we talking whole mailboxes or individual e-mails?

If you are just looking for email storage you don't need a backup solution necessarily. As i said before we use Barracuda backup for our data but not for emails. We use Barracuda Message archiver for this as it is designed just for email and allows easy access and is linked to AD groups. Personally I've never got along with Backup Exec and Exchange (the Dag used to crash), I use Veeam and it just works!

For Exchange 2010 Veeam Backup and Replication has an inbuilt tool (i.e. coming at no additional cost, unlike Symantec Exchange Agent) for granular recovery of Exchange Server items, be it either individual messages, contacts, notes, or entire mailboxes. It's called Veeam Explorer for Exchange.
