Switched on ICT Early Years to Year 6

Hi all

 

I've just pushed out shortcuts for this software from Rising Stars using GP on out 2008 Server R2. Shortcuts are fine, program opens etc. However, when you click on any Docs or PDF files to open them, the software refuses to open them and gives the error that it can't find the resources. All items were copied into the correct folders and I can access these via UNC and open them manually. Anyone any ideas why this is happening?

Yes, authenticated users, they have full control. I install software all the time via GP using this share. 1st time I've seen this. I'm well scratching my head.

No. Besides, I'm logged on as a domain administrator and they won't open for me either.

Is there an .ini file? if so are the resources in the location that this points to? If not edit it to where you want and try it again.

 

If no .ini file your have to find which installation file references the resources and adjust accordingly.

I'm 99% sure I've had this exact problem with this software. From what I recall it wouldn't open it from a UNC path, but would work from a mapped drive.

Thought I posted this earlier on, but doesn't look like it:

 

UNC Paths are not supported. Needs to be ran from a network drive. Why oh Why?!?!

 

On admin log in, map yourself a drive to the teacher share (Make sure its the same letter as the teachers use), open it up, find the flash file, copy shortcut to desktop, rename.

Now copy the shortcut into the start menu or where ever you need it to be.

Should now pick it up as running from a network drive.

Just tested this, it works.

We have switched on science and had to change each BAT with full UNC paths to the Doc/PDF files.

 

Works fine for us after this

Spoke to rising stars about this @GrumbleDook... they said that UNC is not supported and that the software has to be run from a mapped drive. I'm not entirely sure of the conversation as it was my colleague that was handling the case but I know he changed the shortcuts to run from mapped drive and it is now working fine.

Many thanks for bringing this thread to my attention. This is a commonly reported support issue for new installations and applies to all CD-ROMs from the ‘Switched On’ range of materials (ICT, Computing, Science).

 

The documented installation procedure is to copy all files from the CD-ROM to a shared area on the network and then create a shortcut to the ‘starthere’ executable and distribute the shortcut to the client PCs. However in order for the program to work correctly this shared area needs to be mapped to a network drive letter (e.g. P:\), as UNC or relative paths (e.g. //servername/...) are not supported.

 

The problem becomes apparent when a user clicks on any of the ‘Open File’ buttons within the application and receives an error message stating that the file cannot be found. [The] installation instructions are being updated to reflect this for future releases or reprints, but please let me know if you need any more details.

 

As a note, due to changes to the curriculum in England, Switched on ICT is now replaced by Switched on Computing (apart from EY).

Would anyone else find a centralised document with hyperlinks for the recommended software, or an additional cd/dvd with all the msi's, and shortcuts on helpful?

 

It just seems to be taking forever looking through, downloading the software, creating web shortcuts etc.

There are quite a few pieces of edu 'software' that are just a bunch of pfd & doc files which would be better stuck on an intranet server (if that's what you're getting at). Switched on Computing is one of them so it's yes from me.
