Shadow_Walker Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) I have enrolled 11 ipads successfully but then on the final two which i was doing i have hit a problem. Meraki pushes the apps i want to the iPads but then they sit on the iPad just waiting and after a couple of minutes its says the apps could not be downloaded at this time. I have unenrolled the devices and done a clean install also turned the devices on an off again about a million times. Anyone came across this problem before? Edit: No Apps are installing now!!!!!!!! Yep! I get this every batch of iPads I do. I've started enrolling them one by one now as the first iPads to get the apps go through fine, but the downloads get slower and slower until the last few get stuck "waiting". If I wait until all the apps are on one before moving on to the next I don't seem to get any issues. There's been some suggestion around the office here that someone in our external IP range has a caching server turned on, but I'm not sure.
Badzeye Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 We get this often as well. Your are not part of the BGFL are you?
seawolf Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 The shared IP ranges that so many if the UK schools seem to use seems to exacerbate any issues with iPads by 10,000 fold. I would hedge my bets that is causing it.

abillybob Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Yep happened to us. This happened on almost any MDM solution we tried to use! Just stick to Configurator you'll be amazed on how much time you can waste on trying to get these things to work! Edit: It will be because you share the same External IP Address as other schools, if you didn't they'd just work, it would be slow downloading all those apps at the same time but it wouldn't give up! 1

Its funny at my last job i had so many problems with the lightspeed mdm but never to this extent. Thought the other solutions would be better when i started at my new place but every solution just seems as bad as each other.

Thought the other solutions would be better when i started at my new place but every solution just seems as bad as each other. I visited a school in Wales which had only iPads nothing else only iPads and a Mac server, they had a standard BT Fibre Optic Broadband setup like you would at home. You'd be amazed at how well it all worked, apps where transferred in seconds, management was great, connecting to the Mac Server's shared folders was easy, it was seamless. Unfortunatley unless you're going down that route then you'll get problems (in the UK anyway). All if not most councils share the external IP between schools on the LEA Network and apple just doesn't get on with it. You can only try your best so much and it keep failing when you throw in the towel and say lets stick with Configurator which FYI has stupid buggy problems too! I have just been discussing these LearnPad tablets on here and I must say they seem excellent, the one worry for me is the slight lack of apps but the deployment, management etc... side of things is spot on and that's all most of us want, hopefully LearnPad will incorporate more apps soon but it's the most rock solid tablet solution I have come across to date and yes I have been through A LOT of tablets.
Edu-IT Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Pop in a new BT line with a static IP just to setup the new iPads. Probably be Apple's recommendation to solve it. I personally haven't faced the shared IP address issue with Lightspeed. Edit: Just realised why, our external IP appears to be static so we won't be sharing this with anyone else. Could you ask for a static external IP? Edited July 4, 2014 by Edu-IT
jaf Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 We've got exactly the same problem at our school - apps get deployed by meraki fine but have to be tapped on many, many times to get them to download and they tend to just give up partway through the download process. Eventually they will install after 10+ attempts! We don't have a line provided by the LEA however - its Virgin Media fibre and we have a static IP address? So what could be causing the issues here? Thanks

jaf Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Hmm not using Google DNS, using our ISP's. Could it be our proxy server? Are there any more ports I can open on the firewall apart from the ones listed for meraki? Not sure what is meant by broken cache server. No problems anywhere else with downloading anything, just ipad apps via meraki. Thanks
seawolf Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Broken cache server or using google dns that breaks apples cdn lookups maybe +1 on not using Google DNS (or OpenDNS) if you are downloading from the Apple Store. Pretty much anything hosted/routed through Akamai in fact. If we use either of these for our DNS, it takes a weekend to download a bunch of apps (or media) from the Apple Store. Slashdot
