Backup System Recommendations

Hi everyone,

 

I'm trying to push for a better backup system in the school for the curriculum servers.

 

Any ideas??

 

Currently the school is running a tape backup system that covers a maximum of two weeks. I personally find this unacceptable and would like to fit a NAS or SAN or something like that. An automatic tape library would be another consideration but I really don't know where to go.

 

Any help or advice would be greatly recieved here.

NAS should be sufficent for doing backups to. I don't expect you can afford a SAN unless you DIY'd it with GigE/Linux/ATAoE or similar.

 

Remeber you still need off site backup. I'd recommend one or more external USB hard drive(s).

Just in the process of buying an EMC SAN (with snapshot facility) and a Tanberg tape library (not 100% at the mo on which model). The tape library is only £2500ish - speak to Abi at Qual on 0117 373 0017

cmdline driven winrar and some big hard drives in a standalone server. we use a fujitsu p4 workstation and rar user areas into individual archvies that are differential backups. scheduled to run everynight. sends me an email with the results. other backups are put on this server too.

 

when we want to do our offsite backup we just copy the contents of the drive to a usb exernal harddrive.

Well I use a NAS 4000 with Live State Recovery 3.0 From Norton was Powerquest V2i Protector great for backin up and open files on the network

Currently have two HP StorageWorks DAT72i's - one in the admin & one in the curriculum DC's.

 

They work lovely and are pretty quick, but alas the 72Gb is only a "ideal world" max as its refering to 2:1 compression.

 

On the cur DC, I manage to backup 3 partitons totalling 34GB (almost full) which just covers it without compression (altho its enabled anyhow).

 

The admin DC hasn't got that much on it so that ones no bother

 

Wanna get a storage server or NAS device next year probably.

i'd have preferred to be using something more usual like a NAS or arcserver but no one wanted to buy such a thing. i expect i'd still be doing it manually if i hadnt thought up such a cunning system.

Just looking to get a Buffallo Terastation - 1Tb [4 x 250Gb IDE] straight mirror [no redundancy] for £500 - Linux based and ready to go. There's a bigger 1.6Tb [4 x 400] for £1200 as well.
