Introducing BYOD

Has anyone noticed a major hit on either/both Broadband bandwidth and/or cabled network having introduced BYOD across the site? Have you found that BYOD has disrupted a stable wi-fi network using devices you provide and have planned for? Has BYOD turned a predictable network into an unpredictable one? In effect, has BYOD caused problems - whether predicted or not.

 

Grateful for any replies - and any PMs if you're reluctant to admit to a horror story on here.

We have about 250-300 devices on the wifi at any given time, this is a mix of BYOD and managed iPads, nothing really has gone wrong except for safeguarding. I do get reports now and again that the network is running slow but that's probably more down to the infrastructure e.g. the age of PC's (I know this as my PC is fine on the network and I'm running haswell with a SSD whereas the majority of the PC's here are P4's..) and switchgear / uplinks but nothing major.

We have BYOD on our Wireless for pupils (boarding) and we get noticble slowdowns at break/lunch. Just invested in bigger connection but they seem to just max upto it to be honest. Not problem during lessons though.

we found that after last patch Tuesday that the internet connection was maxed out with devices downloading updates. Have subsequently bandwidth limited the byod network for software updates so that they can still update but can only take a 1/10th of our connection to do so.

Just about to launch it for sixth form and staff but plan on using rate limiting per client on the BYOD WLAN to aviod a youtube meltdown.
