Webproxy settings via DHCP

Hi,

 

Is anyone using the facility to set IE webproxy settings via DHCP or DNS.? I've got some clients who aren't members of the domain but I allow to use the internet but they need a proxy setting to get on.

I've got the .pac file which works if you put it in the configuration file but I can't get it to work when I use WPAD.

 

If someone is using it then can they point me in the right direction.

I find a scrap of paper with the proxy address on works well

I've used WPAD in the past but found it to be unreliable. Now I use Group Policy to set proxy. In essence though, you need to have a web server with the IE configuration file in such a location that a web request to http://wpad/wpad.dat will download the file.

Not tried it myself, but you could make a .ins file that only contains the proxy settings. All the user needs to do is run it and it will adjust the proxy settings according to how they are in the .ins file....

 

Like the dialup ISP config's of old

Hi use the DHCP method or DNS method for doing this - the DHCP method allows you to put the .pac file in another webserver and make it point to it as for DNS i think you do need the WPAD.dat file in the webserver and it will always look for this.

 

Using the DNS method is the preffred way of doing this when you got isa server running but both will work.
