dezt Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'm considering using a different Asset Management system at our school, we currently use Equipment Register from FMS but it's causing headaches as all the information that goes into it from FMS is entered in batch form, for example, one entry for an order of 78 PC's, no serial numbers etc. I have been told by our finance officer that we have to use Equipment Register because that's what LCC tell us to use, but i'm not to sure that's the case. I've been told that after the summer holidays the person who currently deals with asset management will no longer be doing it because they don't have time, so it will become an IT task as it's on the computer. I wondered if anyone based in Lancashire uses something different for asset management or is the finance officer here correct that we have to use Equipment Register. I have a feeling we can use whatever we want to, but it's a case of "Well that's what we've always used" If we can use something else, what recommendations do other people have? Thanks.
pettit87 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 (edited) We use parago asset management. It is a cloud based solution. All our desktops run a parago client that updates parago so we can track installed software and check machine hardware. We use iPod touches to scan the barcodes on nearly ever asset when we take an inventor - quick and easy. You can add anything into the system asset-wise and has a csv importer for the bigger imports. It also includes a Helpdesk feature that we use. I don't know the costings. Let me know if I can be of any additional help. We are in Hampshire - not sure if your rules up there! RichCowell Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 We moved from an old spreadsheet to School Asset Manager last year and have been very happy with it so far, especially since their prices dropped dramatically since the first time we had a demo a year or so before... kathabell Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 We have school asset manager and like it; qr key stickies are fairly robust and easy to scan with ipod/ipad. Quick results; and I like the fact that I can attach pdf manuals to an item so no longer need to hunt for part numbers or how to reset a projector display the right way up . It also helps a great deal with the 5 year plan when future planning as you can easily check lifetime dates for kit etc. There's a good chance we will be expanding its use from just IT to COSHH and general building/maintenance. 1

Yes... but the advantage of that, is that you've got a copy of it externally, should the worst happen in school (fire/theft etc.) We've not noticed any disadvantages to it being cloud based so far...

We have an import link from our current SQL database to our help desk. I was wondering whether we could still have this link if the database is in the cloud. I assume the performance would be pretty bad and will cause many headaches.

Are you thinking of replacing your helpdesk with it too? It's not as powerful as some other dedicated helpdesk solutions, so may not be ideal for that... (though it's reasonable, and reliable, and included for free lol)

It has it's own CMDB and we're linking it up to our asset database (Wasp). Wasp would look out of date if it was the '90s so I'm currently on the hunt for a replacement.

We looked at Wasp a few years ago, but never got the feeling it'd be straight forward enough for everyone to use - plus it needed the barcode scanner... Couldn't tell you whether SAM would be suitable to link like that... have you asked them? I've not really needed their support, but it seems really good...

I've not really needed their support, but it seems really good... I spoke to a reseller and his techs say you can but I don't think he understood what I was asking. Might just get a demo and see.

When we looked at it, we were quoted £2,800 a year - so we decided to go another way with asset management. It's a lot of money to spend when we are having to cut back in other areas.
