witch Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Thinking ahead to mrwITch's birthday, he has been mentioning quadcopters a lot lately. He is currently doing a course via TUM (Munich Uni) entitled Autonomous Navigation for Flying Robots (!) and it is based on the quadcopter I would like to buy him a "starter" quadcopter - if such a thing exists. He already has several helicopters sat on a shelf so I don't want to spend too much initially in case it ends up in the same place! All advice gratefully received
Arthur Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) DJI Phantom + GoPro HERO3+ BLACK Edition? Might be too expensive though. Edited June 3, 2014 by Arthur 1
Quadcopter Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Buy him a Hubsan X4 H107C HD, This is a fantastic little Quadcopter great for beginners, its got a 2.MP camera for shooting video, fantastic fun to fly indoors and outside. It sells for under £50 you will find a review here The Best Quadcopter Reviews I have one of these models and I can't fault it. 1
witch Posted June 3, 2014 Author Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) @Quadcopter THe Hubsan looks great but I am unable to find an X4107C HD - Amazon have one but without the HD - is that the same? Do I want right or left hand throttle? @Arthur - yes, that is a bit more than I was prepared to spend! Edited June 3, 2014 by witch
Quadcopter Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) Hi Witch Click Here you will wait a few weeks for delivery but well worth it.(The video on the standard version is not that good). Buy Mode 2 Left hand Throttle Edited June 4, 2014 by Quadcopter 1
TechSupp Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Why left hand throttle? Whats the difference and does that depend if you are right or left handed?
pcstru Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 @Quadcopter THe Hubsan looks great but I am unable to find an X4107C HD - Amazon have one but without the HD - is that the same? Do I want right or left hand throttle? That's got a live transmitter with LCD to view it on. You want : This one @ a much more reasonable £39. Mode 2 is left hand throttle. 1
pcstru Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) Why left hand throttle? Whats the difference and does that depend if you are right or left handed? It won't make much difference learning to fly, unless you have flown RC before. Mode 2 (left handed) is pretty standard though, so if you pick up any other kit or someone offers you a go of theirs, it is likely to be mode 2. If you fly for real, you might find that having pitch and roll on the same stick is somewhat familiar. [ETA - seeing Mr Witch has helicopters on the shelf, he almost certainly has some flying experience and wants mode 2]. Edited June 4, 2014 by pcstru
TechSupp Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Thanks, not done any flying before and just wondered what the difference was.
witch Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) *cough If flying experience is watching your helicopter plummet to the ground, then yes.... He always struggled to fly them and in fact got more involved with making modifications to the motor and rotors than actually flying them! So - one of the recommended ones is a mini - are they all minis? - and the other is a bit pricey - looking at amazon they have these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=Hubsan%20X4%20H107C%20 Which one do I get and what is the difference between the first and third one other than whatever "Version 3" means Edited June 4, 2014 by witch

He always struggled to fly them and in fact got more involved with making modifications to the motor and rotors than actually flying them! Ha! Learning to fly Helicopters is extremely difficult. They are ... unforgiving. He should have no problems with the Husban, they are stable, docile and fairly robust (massively so compared to almost any helicopter). You might want to buy a few spare sets of blades and a spare battery or two.
FragglePete Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I'm sure @JAB1a will be along shortly, but buy the bits for him to build one himself? Far more rewarding. But, the Husbans are great fun though. Pete 1
Quadcopter Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Either buy the X4 H107C HD or the H107L(if you don't want a Camera) both are great Quadcopters. Now if it's learning to Fly so he can move to a bigger model then the Walkera Ladybird V2 is the perfect Quadcopter. I fly Mode 2 thats what I'm used to, I tried Mode 1 recently and couldn't get the hang of it! 1
IT_Man_Dan Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 Just had to drop in on this thread. Me and my techy have recently developed an interest for the Quadcopters. My Techy started with the Hubsan H107L, I was so impressed with it I ordered the non HD H107C version, which is good for a bit of fun but only has a 0.3 megapix camera. My techy then decided to buy the H107D to get FPV which is quite fun although again it only has the 0.3 megapix camera. My caretaker has now also got the H107L and plans to jump straight to the DJI Phantom 2 Vision next which looks awesome but pricey! I have to admit I'm also tempted with the phantom next once I've saved the pennies. I Can't fault the Hubsan quads at all, great fun and easy to fly and they take quite a beating (fallen onto concrete and through trees etc and still going), word of advice is if you go for just the H107L buy the protection ring for the blades - you'll need it! the others all come with one. We have also bought 5x 500mah batteries each and a 5 way charge lead to give us longer flying time as the battery that comes with it takes about 40 mins to charge for a 10 minute flight time! - Not bad but it goes flat just as you get into it! Happy flying 1
Quadcopter Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I've published this Flying Tips Sheet any if anyone has anything else they think needs to be added please forward your suggestions. IT_Man_Dan is spot on with his suggestions and I will add the 5way charge lead to my tips 2
hallb15 Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 +1 for the Hubsan X4 and you definitely should get the protection ring and probably a spare battery or two - as @IT_Man_Dan said, you just get into it and the battery dies - there's nothing more frustrating Get this one: New Version Upgraded Hubsan X4 V2 H107L 2.4G 4CH RC Quadcopter RTF: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories And this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hubsan-H107L-Quadcopter-Parts-Protection/dp/B00FDOWVN2/ref=pd_sim_computers_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0W8DG5K4HJB2BKYPY84C And maybe some spare batteries: http://www.amazon.co.uk/240mAh-Battery-Hubsan-H107L-Quadcopter/dp/B00CFEG5A8/ref=pd_sim_k_h_b_cs_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=11Y2FMYQF9AXG446JR6X The version of the X4 with a camera is just a bit gimmicky - it records to an SD card, but this can be a bit flaky and just uses extra battery power that could be used for flying longer! If he really gets into quadcopter flying, then he can look at investing in something a bit better but you can't go wrong with the X4 to get started. 2

witch Posted June 4, 2014 Author Posted June 4, 2014 I'm still a bit confused - there are various options with cameras but I am unable to find the original HD one. I think he would really like a camera - is this one OK? http://www.amazon.co.uk/X4-Quadcopter-H107C-with-Camera/dp/B00D8UO8G6/ref=pd_cp_computers_0/278-9694267-0814320

The HD cameras are better but IMO the cameras in these micro quads are a bit of a gimmick. They add weight and drain power. They will also temp high flying to get the best shots and that tends to be risky with sudden gusts blowing the quad into the nearest roof gutter or the pilot losing orientation and flying it out of sight. He will have plenty of fun just learning to fly the basic model and if he gets bitten by the bug, he can either buy another one with a camera or velcro on a car key camera (or there are even camera's made specifically for this). 1
Quadcopter Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) Beware of Imitations I'm not sure that is an original Hubsan on your Amazon link, there are many copies CLICK HERE of without camera CLICK HERE Edited June 4, 2014 by Quadcopter typo 1
pcstru Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (edited) Who me? It's not a Husban quad, it's just an example of a camera which could be fitted later, should witch go with the, ahem, Scottish option. (and I'm not suggesting she buy that one, just illustrating that fitting a camera later on is eminently possible) Edited June 4, 2014 by pcstru
Quadcopter Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 I wasn't referring to your post pstru I was referring to the link to Amazon Witch posted

I'm going to agree with this!^^ In my opinion, save your money and get a non-camera Hubsan X4 to learn to fly along with a few spare batteries and props. Although the Hubsans fly really well, I've found mine to become quite sluggish with only just a few extra grams of weight. Like I've mentioned on here before in one of the other multi-rotor threads, I love my Hubsan! It's perfect for learning the controls both indoors and out, although go too high and it becomes easy to lose orientation. And in answer to your earlier question regarding controls, Mode 2 is the most common in the UK, throttle on the left. 1
