Big Brother Diary Room style big button and video software

Any one here set anything like this up. Kids walk in, hit a button and record a message.

 

We can of course do this relatively easily and already have a nice programmable USB button for kids to hit for recording. However thought I'd use good ole edugeek to ask for opinions on best video capture software to use, any experience from your guys and gals in this area, in particular anything to avoid!

Have you looked to see if there's any Raspberry pi projects that do something simiar?
