Whats best Intel Chips or AMD Chips?

Intel, Intel, Intel... For my gaming rig anyway, runs cooler, better performance etc Mainly all personal opinion though. Don't hate on other people rigs when we all share the same love in the end ;D

With regards to graphics cards so GPU's, does it make any difference what processor you have so for example if I got an Intel CPU and a motherboard that supported an intel cpu ( regardless of what Intel CPU so i Core series i3, 5 or 7 or Xeon or whatever ) and then AMD GPU's

 

Or visa versa an AMD CPU / Relevant Motherboard that supports the AMD CPU and then NVidia GPU's ?

 

Will that have any bottle necks or does it not make any difference what so ever mixing and matching GPU's with the type of processor

 

Mix and match to your heart's content. AMD tried to push a unified platform idea a few years back but it never really went anywhere. PCI-E is PCI-E no matter the brand of GPU chip it's using on the card.

Wasn't sure if Intel worked better with Nvidia and if AMD CPU / mobo combo worked better with AMD GPU's etc or as you say mix and match like its a lucky dip ??

I'm trying to move everything to AMD at the moment, as their pricing is so much cheaper. My 3 VM Hosts are running dual 16 core opterons at 3GHz. Intel's answer to that is to make each core run 2 threads, which seems silly to me (I know that they have chips that report that they have 24 cores, but they're just hyperthreaded 12 core).

 

I think for virtualisation it's AMD all the way. More cores, larger cache. Happily accept slower clock speeds and less efficient instruction pipelines. Even my most demanding SQL server has never showed any signs of needing the single core speed an Intel processor would bring.

I've got an nVidia GTX 680 running on an AMD Phenom II X4 at the moment and it's fine, no instability or anything. I didn't even take off the old AMD drivers when I swapped out the old AMD 5700 cards and it's been fine. (I wanted to keep the Catalyst Control Center for the hot-key swapping of display setups, so I could keep switching between monitor, monitor+TV, and TV primary.)

 

Everything will run faster with an Intel CPU simply because they're better performing parts, but you're talking a couple of frames per second in most cases, and it's not worth worrying about - money's better spent on the GPU if you're gaming on a budget.

Remember the P4? You had to notify both the local power plant and the UN climate change people before you could fire up one of those!

Vaguely, don't think I've ever used one though. Came out around the 2000 mark didn't they? I started working in IT 2 years ago and the sixth form centre I was in before hand had relatively new kit. :)

If you fancy giving him a challenge see if he knows what witchcraft I need to perform in order to get Operon 8431 hex cores to work in a DL585 G2? It'll save me bulding one later :)

P4's Came out about 2002 in Intels panic to catch us with AMD. They sucked power and ran studpidly hot for not much power gain over the AMD chips which were much cheaper at the time. I remeber buying a classroom of P4's and a classroom of AMD Semprons which knocked spots of their Celeron equivelents. Did anyone actually like Celerons? I always found them painfully slow regardless of the speed they were supposed to be.

I liked them as an improvised psychological torture device (learning aid) for the less polite members of staff. There again I was still in high school when those were being put in and I had the displeasure of supporting them.

Now it's the other way around...

 

AMD FX-9590 (220 watts) + AMD Radeon R9 295X2 GPU (500 watts) = hot hot hot! :)

Tell that to owners of the Celeron 300a and 366a. Even at stock they were as quick as the full blown Pentiums, and when overclocked they wiped the floor with them.

At the moment, AMD are just lagging behind across the board. Its a shame really, as I do like their stuff. I was an AMD user until I left uni. I got one of the first 1Ghz Athlon CPUs when it came out, and stuck with them until the Athlon 64 x2 6400+. Then I switched to an Intel iMac, and stuck with Intel since.

 

AMD just haven't been able to provide the price vs performance tradeoff they used to.

I couldn't get used to the number or naming of Intel cores, or which Generations they are at. Upgrading a Laptop CPU was a pain, never sure which CPU to use 478 or 479 etc

So I stuck to AMD, which isnt bad at all and very much enjoying it running AMD FX 8350 @4Ghz both at work and at home.

 

I have AMDat work with our Hyper-V servers too, so if i need to upgrade the CPU with more cores I can do and get up 24-cores if I need too.

 

BTW GF is Making Beer battered COD and Chips this weekend!

Problem with AMD's is .. and I made this mistka eonce when I was first getting into computers.. I went into a shop and bought an AMD Athlon 3300+ or something like that... got home and installed it and it was a 1.8GHz.... But I thought on the box it said 3300 ? 3300 is not the speed!
