FMS is bringing up the old: UNHANDLED EXCEPTION IN SIMS FMS MODULE General SQL Error. (Sybase)(OBDC Driver)Unable to Connect to database sever: unable to start database engine I've had a look on the server and the SQL_ANYWHERE service isn't running, and it won't start, even after a server restart. Any ideas and the finance staff are chewing my ear off! Thanks! Seb
localzuk Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Have you tried re-installing FMS on the server? Rename the sqlany50 folder on the c: drive to something else, and the FINANCE folder wherever it is (either c:\program files\sims or d:\program files\sims usually) to finance.old, then follow the usual method of installing FMS. When you are asked for the database, enter the local path of the db file (here it is d:\simsarea\sims\sql). Ensure you choose the right options though (ie. tick the server option). This is what we did to get it working again when we had a similar problem.
seb_king Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 Thanks for the quick reply localz, I haven't tried reinstalling FMS, to be honest i'm not that experienced with sims or fms and the guy who is, is off work. So unless there isn't another way, looks like i may have to reinstall fms on the server?
dan400007 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Make sure that no-one in the school currently has FMS open the: On your FMS server run, C:\SQLANY50\WIN32\DBSVMN50.EXE Stop the service and then start it. Usually works, if not will FMS run ok on the actual FMS server?
seb_king Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 @dan The service isn't even running, it won't start. I've just tried to run FMS on the server and it brought up the same error as the client machines.
localzuk Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Ok, just need to confirm that the database file is where it should be - go to start -> run on the server, and type odbcad32. Now on the 'system DSN' tab click on the SIMS32 item and click configure. Under 'database file' there should be a path - check that the file that is listed there actually exists where it should be.
dan400007 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Is there any indication in the system event log to indicate why the service has failed to start? If not then maybe rename the folder and try a reinstall but I've never done that either. If you don't want to reinstall FMS then you could try renaming the FMS folders and restoring them from last nights backup.
seb_king Posted October 31, 2007 Author Posted October 31, 2007 @ localz Database file is in order, where it should be @ dan The error in the event log is very vauge and unhelpful - The description for Event ID in Source (SQLANYs_SUMS_SQL_DB_Server) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. Could not start server Its a pain in the backside!
dan400007 Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 mmmm, its died more than mine ever has I'm afraid. :x Load the service manager for SQL Anywhere again and you should be able to edit the service configuration by clicking edit. Check that the path to the exe is correct (C:\SQLANY50\WIN32\DBSRV50.EXE). I have no idea what all the parameters are for but for my server they are as follows: -n SIMS_Server -c 8192 -tl 1500 -x NamedPipes,TCPIP Hope this helps.

localzuk Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 I would advise calling external support - as the instructions I have here for reinstalling FMS may be different for your setup.

We're gonna give FMS a reinstall and see how that goes. It all appears to be down to this SQLANY service though, if it'd just start, fms would work, but it doesn't!
steveg Posted October 31, 2007 Posted October 31, 2007 Have you tried re-starting the server, and removing its network cable, then re-starting the service? May sound strange but I have had a similar issue before which this resolved - I think its something to do with a client starting up a copy of the database server, and it wont start if it finds another one running on the network. splattthecat Posted November 1, 2007 Posted November 1, 2007 This error can occur when a workstation setup has been run incorrectly and has been installed as a FMS server, or a new server has been implemented and the old server is still present on the network with the FMS service still running. Check for FMS server services running on other machines and stop & disable them.
