Does anyone drive a Skoda/VW with a SDI Engine

Hi all.

 

Looking for anyone drive with VW or Skoda with a SDI engine.

 

I'm about to look a few cars for a work house and would be nice if anyone owned or driven one.

 

 

I do around 80miles a day plus little run around during the weekend. I have another car that my partner drives as the family car.

Solid engines apart from the lack of power, with no Turbo/intercooler to go wrong.

I'm a big fan of the Focus TD.

bullet proof with proper servicing not sure if they have dual mass flywheels or not worth checking as stop starting kills them

couple of mates have had seat/skoda's with the 1.9 SDI in ibiza's liked them

 

i have a focus TD estate (not the TDCI) which is still going strong with 180K on the clock and it does 50mpg on a run and they can be picked up cheap.

the 3/5 door hatches are badged as TDDI's rather than TDCI's

Another vote for the VW 1.9 tdi engines. Very solid with a fair bit of power.

The older HDi French lumps are pretty indestructible too

I used to have a golf with a 2.0 TDI engine. Excellent! never had an issue and great on fuel. I now have a Scirocco with a 2.0 TSI. Great again and nippy but the fuel consumption is a pain.

Nope but similar. General feedback about similar engines surely is better than nothing?

Just looking for something cheeper than my 04 Laguna 1.9 dCi. (does around 45mpg)

 

I had a 1.9 XLD 306 that was fun. Great MPG aswell. Just body work let it down (P reg)

 

I know the VW TDI are great engines but looking at the non-turbo engines as its a work horse,

 

I just saw a saloon Skoda on ebay with full spec (Air con, CL, EW,s) and i though i would ask on here.

The none turbo diesels often prove less efficient then their more powerful turbo version, also not nearly as nice to drive.

Yup, the SDI has a reputation as a tough but miserable engine - not that economical, they're slow, but they're under stressed and tough.

 

There are a number of good choices in that category. Avoid the 307 HDi, despite how good the 306 was. They're a bucket, especially earlier ones. The Focus TDCi is fun and quick in 115PS form but too fragile, the TDdi is a better choice. Avoid any Mk3 TDCi Mondeo - again the TDdi is okay.

 

The Volvo S40 post 2004 is actually a sound choice - shares many components with the mk2 Focus and includes the much better PSA 2.0 diesel. Not worth much now, good cars.

I had bad experiences with the TDI Ford engine, the early focuses used a modified Endura engine both my (brand new) Focuses had major issues like screaming turbo chargers after 15,000 miles and one needed a new short engine at 69,000 both were serviced properly. I had another one with the TDCI engine and was much much better never broke down once I put 140k on that from new

I have a 51 plate Fabia 1.9SDi - It now has 118000 miles on the clock and like others have said it's absolutely solid. Its certainly not fast & does need to be worked to maintain speed, especially on long gradual climbs where you have to keep dropping down gears but it will otherwise happily run along quietly doing 70mph at 2500rpm so fuel economy is great. I don't drive it hard so tend to get around 47-50mpg. Some people on the Skoda forums claim 70mpg but I personally find that hard to believe. 100 miles to a tenner is probably just about achievable if you are keeping strictly to 60mph on a long motorway journey but fluctuations in traffic flow etc will obviously affect this.

The only advice I would strongly recommend is keeping to a proper maintenance schedule & regular oil changes... my timing belt snapped at Easter! It wasn't due to be changed until 120000 miles but despite the full service history the mechanic who repaired it said it looked like the timing belt had never actually been changed. One of those things I'll never be able to prove but a costly reminder to not put things like that on the back burner.

Not really in this case as there is a big difference between turbo diesel and a non turbo and he was asking about the non turbo and lots of people seem to have experience of the non turbo's on the thread.
