dell latitude e5520 laptop - error colours distorted when log on

Over the past two weeks I have had a number of laptops which look fine when get log on screen, but the moment you log on the colours go psychedelic.

I have found fix by removing and adding the intel graphics driver but I find it strange that:

  • Why isn't it effecting the log on screen if it is a graphics issue.
  • There are no errors in event logs and running dell hardware diagnostics nothing is picked up.
  • There are no errors showing on the driver in device manager.
  • The computers that have been affected have been working for well over a year without being reimaged.
  • We have well over 400 of the same laptop within the school so why hasn't affected more computers

Just a bit puzzled at the moment?

We had this before where students had managed to find a way into the graphics menu via some hotkeys that weren't disabled, at the login screen all looked fine but as soon as you logged in the colours all went mental as they'd modified the theme. Could try looking in that direction?

Just a few things

1) Update Intel graphics card drivers , presume they use onboard Intel Graphics

2) Test the RAM on the laptops / machines effected with something like memtest+86 ( http://www.memtest86.com/ ) or similar or even the dell diagnostics ( https://www.dell.com/support/Diagnostics/us/en/19/ ) or Dell do a diagnostic ISO or I think you may be able to get to the dell diagnostics from the boot menu so pressing F12 before it loads windows but just after it posts - to fully test the RAM in the machines

3) If you stop and disable the following exe from starting up and or running does that help at all ( so using msconfig and task manager to stop it from starting with windows and also to kill it off from running whilst logged in )

igfxpers.exe
