Server Migration

It's probably a really simple question, but I've never set up a server before so I'm kinda new to this, but I am getting a new server at one of my primary schools soon and I was wondering if when you migrate the old server to the new one:

What does it actually migrate/copy across

If I were to do this does it stop your old server from working and make the network look to your migrated server straight away or can I not have it do that until I'm completely ready.

Shouldn't be a problem, what ever roles your running on your 2008.... Add them onto your server 2012 joined to the domain and that will work - the roles will take over on 2012. Any shares etc copy them over to the 2012 server with permissions, share settings and that will work too.

 

I believe your 2008 server will still work, it just won't serve the roles as it will be demoted. (Never done it so don't quote me:))

 

OR if you wanted to, build a new domain on server 2012, and copy across your shares and add users etc.

Only advise I would give is to check your eventvwr first and ensure old server is running Ok. If there seems any major issues with AD then get them resolved before trying to migrate

i think you need to run ADprep tool for joining an 2012 server to a 2008 based domain.

It's all built into the Server Manager now - no direct need to call Adprep - it does the lot for you.

As long as you are keeping the 2008 server, just create a new DC on the same domain. You can then transfer DNS, DHCP roles, Users, User home directories etc when you have some downtime, depending on how you want to load balance, split the roles and how powerful the new and old servers are. Makes sense to keep both if you can for failover.

Thanks for all the comments. Governors approved the new server so now just have to wait for it to get ordered and I shall give it a go, once again you guys on edugeek have been an awesome help :)
