Recommend me a Virtual (Host) Server

Im in the market for a Virtual physical server to install VMware esxi to run virtual servers - looking to spend around £2k - could people let me know what they have bought recently for that price with spec etc..

Installed my first ESXi host last week. HP Proliant DL380p G8. 32Gb RAM, 2 x 12 core Opteron.

IBM x3650 M3 - I think we got it for just under 2k, we also have a Dell 2950 which is just used as a backup but is running ESXI cost me just under £50, We Also have a couple of development servers for running ESXI which are HP Proliants ML110 G7's which are about £300, all servers have 12-24 GB of RAM and 2+ TB Storage - we have A SAN so don't need loads of internal storage on servers.

 

All of our servers are running the free version of ESXI as this is all we require.

Last two were bespoke model from Novatech. Highly recommended. 2x 12-core 2.6Ghz AMD processors. 128Gb Ram. 6x1Gbps NIC's. 2x 250Gb HDD RAID-1. About £2,500. That was over a year ago so specs/prices/markets have almost certainly changed somewhat.

we've just bought 3 diskless DL385p gen8 to go with our new SAN. they are dual opteron 12 core with 96gb of ram and were £1600 each, so by the time you have added disks, you are going to be a bit above your budget, but you can get one of HPs partners to put in a educational pricing support bid. We have used Blue Chip data systems in this case, but we usually use BT Business Direct for HP purchasing.

This really depends on how many servers/what servers you'll be running on it. What warranty do you need? How much RAM do you need? Will the storage be internal or will it be using an existing shared storage setup for the disk images?

was thinking around 4 or 5 Virtual servers - internal storage and minimum 16gb RAM

I would say a Dell or HP offering would suffice, Are you going to buy a license for VMWare ? If not the free version is good but it has it's limitations.
