But, as good as the N64 was (and it was the closest Nintendo ever got to the hardcore market) it too failed against the compition. It's game library is a fraction of the PS1. I've seen some comparison vids on YouTube recently and the textures on the PS1 make a huge difference. The catridge media was over priced and ultimately couldn't contain the same content as a CD. This is Nintendo all over. Had the N64 been released with a CD-Rom drive I'm sure their fortunes might have been different. Even the GameCube - which is an otherwise spectacular piece of hardware - is hampered by it's proprietory mini-DVD format.

Can Nintendo develop a Spec equivalent next gen console and attract third party support? And what about online service and multiplayer. They are so far behind it's not funny.

Really can't see how Nintendo can mount a direct assult on the big 2. And don't forget Steam are looming on the horizon for thier shot at the title.

Of course you'd say that being straight, white, cis-male scum.[/sarcasm]

Demanding same-sex marriage gets put into THIS game is an unnecessary headache for the devs and a pointless conversation... because it ain't happening.

Asking for it to be added into the next one [if there is a next one] is what they should be doing. Tell them you liked the look of it, but didn't buy it BECAUSE OF THIS and that you would be more likely to buy the next one if it had same-sex marriage.

Stockholders love that stuff. More people buying means more money for them. If they can make a change before it goes gold that could make them more money, they'll more than likely do it.

I just don't understand why, in this day and age, we have to put limits on such basic things. Nintendo's response has been "we never intended to make a social commentary" - well, you made a game that encourages you to live a virtual life, then stopped people from being gay in your virtual world, so you are making a social commentary whether you like it or not.

I think it's safe to say that most people who are campaigning for this are not developers. They may not understand the complexity involved in adding gay characters in to the game (though I really don't see how it could possibly be that difficult to do but hey-ho). What Nintendo should have done is, rather than try to play it off as unimportant/irrelevant, said "we have heard your concerns and although it's too late to add that option in to this game, we will bear your concerns in mind for future games."

That's all it needed, acknowledgement of the problem.

By the way, I'm a 26 year old, white, heterosexual male. Some people ought to try a little empathy.

They do say that in their response:

"We will continue to listen and think about the feedback. We're using this as an opportunity to better understand our consumers and their expectations of us."

I think it depends on how they identify characters.

If relationship progression is set up as:

IF 1$ = MALE && IF 2$ = FEMALE;

THEN SOMETHING$ = RELATIONSHIP$ + 10;

IF RELATIONSHIP$ >= 100;

THEN BABBY$ = TRUE

BABBY_MOTHER$ = 2$

BABBY_FATHER$ = 1$

Could be done another way without relying on gender as the identifier. But if too much stuff relies on it, it'd need to be reworked from the ground up.

I stopped caring about the campaigns of SJWs, and they people they supposedly talk for, when they literally called me a rape apologist for liking a webcomic.

Totally forgot WHY I got called a rape apologist... then I remembered :(

So where do they throw the dice?

Can't compete with Sony/Microsoft

Can't compete with Ouya/Fire TV/AppleTV

Can't compete with Android/iOS

Can't compete with Steam

What's left?

My guess is that thay have had quite a few meetings with those points on the agenda. I do wonder if hubris had set in and they stopped watching what the competition was doing and lived in 'Nintendo is great' land for too long. They simply didn't evolve.

I'll admit I've been tempted to get a Wii-U, simply put, I have a child, if you look at the main selection of games for the xbox\playstation, it's not aimed a children. The Wii-U is. If I was Nintendo I would ditch the console market and just make games for a family section for xbox. Heck the only reason I'd plug a Wii-U into the TV is for Mario! Only nice thing about the Wii-U is that it's backwards compatible (can play Wii games). Surely game development is more profitable then game development + console development.

Hopefully Microsoft and Nintendo will sign some agreement so I can get Mario on the xbox

Imagine what a success Mario Kart 8 would be on PS4/X1. What if it was cross-platform multi-player!? They would be on to a winner.

I find Nintendo quite stubborn these days, and it will be their downfall.

They could even release all of the classic N64/Gamecube games on iOS/Android and they would dominate the app charts.

£4.99 to play as Master Chief on Xbone.

£4.99 to play as [big Sony character] on PS4.

£3.99 each for "new" tracks.

£6.99 to disable blue shells.

Requires PS+/XBL Gold to play online.

But they would also have more than 10 players online who bought the Wii U ;)

I'd rather 10 coolguys on WiiU, than 100million+ dudebros on Xbone.

Can you imagine - on XBL? 10-11 yr old american boys screaming obscenities down their headsets? You want Nintendo to expose your sweet innocent children to that?

I have a 360, a PS4, a psudeo-gaming laptop, a 3DS, a Wii, a gamecube, a N64, a Megadrive, a NES, various gameboys and an old Win95 machine [one day I WILL play diskworld] [Also; get on my level.]

Plus no kids.

...and I'd rather not deal with sexist, racist, homophobic 12 year olds.

You're right, I forgot homophobic 12 year olds were exclusive to consoles.

They're not, but XBL does seem to be the online equivalent of swigging White Lightening on the swings in the local park.

Yup.

Because Steam actually does something about it. :p

In all seriousness, there are more kids on consoles than there are on PC. They may exist on PC, but you're more likely to run into them on console.

I am picking up MK8 to see what it is like. It will be the first big test of Nintendo's online infrastructure too.

True, having said that I originally bought BF4 for PC and I was shocked how childish they were online. They were calling people who performed badly names, swearing, kicking/banning people if they weren't winning the game. Very hostile towards new players, a lot of PC elitists running their mouth about how they have the best specs etc, etc.. Not to mention the cheats/aimbots.

I returned it on PC (kept crashing) and got it on PS4, and the online experience is so much better. Friendly people, play in a team, much more fun IMO.

Got to be honest, this is why I never play multiplayer games. I've a game hasn't got a strong single player story - it's not worth playing. That said, local multiplayer can be fun with friends/family, but it's rarely supported in the console world these days.

It's such a shame! nearly everything was split-screen back in the day. Me and my friends often struggle to find a good offline multiplier game to play - usually end up playing a team ladder on Mortal Kombat 9 (PC).

Mario Party used to be one of my personal faves. Sunk some hours into that. Also, golden-eye, obviously ;)
