Smart Notebook startup error - .NET 4 Framework client profile

I've been banging my head against a weird Smart Notebook problem for a couple of weeks now, and having just solved it, wanted to share my findings in case it proved useful to anyone.

 

The problem was that when loading up Smart Notebook, we were getting the following error message:

 

"Smart Notebook software was unable to load the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 client profile", with prompts to reinstall .NET 4. Reinstalling .NET, for the record, made no difference.

 

It was only doing it for one user, and despite not having roaming profiles in place, was affecting said user on multiple computers, even after having reimaged one.

 

After a lot of trawling about on the web, and doing side-by-side comparisons of user profiles on the same laptop that DIDN'T have the problem, I found that the custom.xml file in My Documents\SMART Notebook was showing as 0Kb for the affected user, but 5Kb for any other user not having the problem.

Replacing the 0Kb file with the 5Kb file fixed the issue, with Smart Notebook now loading up fine.

 

The reason it'd been affecting the user was that their files are held centrally with folder redirection in place.

 

Apologies if this doesn't come as news to most people, but it took me ages to find the solution, so I'd thought I'd be nice and share

Many thanks, I had the same problem and this worked for me. I believe that if you delete custom.xml then SMART Notebook will build a new one from scratch.

 

P.S. This also kills Word when it tries to load the SMART Ink plugin.

Thank you thank you thank you! Spent an hour trying to sort this on Friday. Notebook not working for one user but working for other users or when running as an Administrator. Deleted that file, opened Notebook and it created a new one and opened up fine

What version of Smart Notebook were you experiencing the problem with?

I had this exact issue with Smart Notebook 11.4. Deleted the custom.xml file and Smart loaded up great!

This just saved me when Notebook wouldn't launch this morning, was beginning to doubt my own sanity wondering if I'd forgotten .NET from the image for a moment there
