What nonsense!

Tablets (specifically iPads) are the best thing that EVER happened to education. With these devices, our students will soon be world-leaders in industry and have the best education in the world. Soon, we won't need anything but tablets for students. I welcome this day!

The proliferation of tablets and the tsunami of mobile devices that are clever classroom companions will not be stopped. The best you will do is learn how to manage them all safely, securely and with the least amount of work and effort on the person responsible for the network.

and face upto kids that don't remember anything because they can use google, have poor handwriting because they don't need to write, square eyes from looking at a screen 24/7, can't leave the house for fear of their batteries running out.

I don't think he said replace basic skills with mobile devices. You can't say just because you use a mobile device you will not be able to remember anything or learn to write..... it is the same as lots of other things which have come along. They are a tool to be used to aid teaching, they are not a tool to replace other skills. If you think of a calculator in school, it can be used instead of calculating in your head BUT if you can't do the basic things in your head you will not be able to tell if you have made a mistake by press the * instead of /.

I cant agree that the use of mobile devices in the classroom is dumbing down our children. Schools are doing their best to equip our children with the skills to succeed in the modern world despite the prescriptive curriculum they have had to follow.

My children use Google on a daily basis and they do remember what they read, they also have learned how to cross reference facts and make up their own opinions on subjects as opposed to being told what to think. They are then quite capable of being able to convey that knowledge and their thoughts in a written context.

Alright i must admit they have scruffy handwriting but so does my doctor and he hasn't done too bad.

Tablets, laptops, interactive whiteboards, LED touchscreens, visulisers and their like are enhancing our schools and helping to improve learning outcomes.

Come on people. Read the article before you post. It's not saying Tablets are bad. It's saying that "addiction" to them can cause problems.

"A motion put forward by Northern Irish teacher Mark Montgomery argues that symptoms of tablet addiction include “withdrawal”, “loss of interest in or ‘crowding out’ other activities”, “lack of control”, “irritability” and even “deception and furtiveness”.

Even the most ardent supporter of Mobile Devices is going to agree that someone displaying those behaviors has a problem and access to technology must be re-evaluated for that person.

I did read the article and i still think its unfair to lay the blame at the door of technology.

From my own experience some children will display these types of behaviors whether they have been using tablets or not. I have seen the same behaviors demonstrated by children after they have finished other types of activity which engaged them completely and which wasn't technology based. Its always difficult getting a class back on a new topic after a particually good lesson.

I don't think tablets are the answer for everything in schools *yet* but can't agree they're like a drug in this respect, that's just daft. OK, so a kid might play a game or two (if able) when theyre not supposed to. Rewind 20 or 30 years. What were WE doing that we shouldn't have been?

Drawing moustaches on the sperms on page 37 of our science book, scratching our names in the desk with the compass and giggling as we typed BOOBLESS into our Casio FX-80 calculators. It's no different in terms of behaviour.
