Email went astray after MX records change

Hi,During February half-term 2014 we changed the MX records associated with xxxxxxxxx.xxxxx.sch.uk to be those of gmail in order to bring the domain fully under the control of our Gapps primary domain.

Our Bursar has continued to keep an eye on the LA exchange mailbox and noticed an email that didn't go into our gmail mailbox but went to the LA exchange mailbox. Could anyone shed any light on why this might have happened? Is it a case of studying the message headers?

Only think i can think of is your TTL was set to a very VERY long time?

Is the email from the LA?

If this was from your LA and you used to route your mail through them then it could be an issue their end. We had this issue a few weeks back when we changed our ISP when the LEA were emailing us but it was floating around in their network as they still had a mail forwarder on to route mail for our domain internally.

It's from another school within the LA.

sounds like they have a dns record internally pointing the wrong way. This isn't an uncommon setup and i see issues like this all the time.

I expect in that case they are still routing internally via possible the same exchange server rather than obeying the mx record for the domain?

 

Due to the fact the la mailbox still exists.
