DNS on Nix box

NM has a nix box - but for some reason it does not like DNS which is running on our 2003 server.

All other XP workstations are working fine and dandy on DNS, just this nix box. Only way to ping a computer name is to stick it in his HOSTs.

Am I missing something bleeding obvious here ?

Does the nix box need to be in an OU or manually put in DNS on server 2003 ?

 

Edit - the nix box already has a DNS entry - sorry my mistake - [ I can ping it from any windows PC ]

I know on ubuntu, you have to go into '/etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf' and uncomment the 'send hostname "blah"' line.

 

If you want to talk netbios (windows neighbourhood) you'll need samba.

Is it getting the DNS correctly from DHCP ?

 

If it's a static address assigned to it, you might want to add the DNS server in the /etc/resolv.conf file.

Thats been done - it still can't ping names on the network.

All other devices are ok, even my freenas boxes. I am going to build a Nix PC later during the week to see if I have similar problems.

I seem to remember building a Mandrake box about 18 months ago and did not have a problem....

Are you trying fully qualified domain names when you attempt to ping? Or are you trying to use the simplified names?
