witch Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I which I know why a unionized work force feel it alright to treat other workers like dirt effectively employment apartheid? How do you mean? Actually improvements achieved by unions often benefit others
Roberto Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I which I know why a unionized work force feel it alright to treat other workers like dirt effectively employment apartheid? Surely it doesn't matter if they're unionised or not. There doesn't have to be some big noble thing here, people should be able to treat others how they would like to be treated. Equally, if that's not happening you may need to stand up for that too.
X-13 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Actually improvements achieved by unions often benefit others Most of the time, but other times [in education] there's a lot of "and we're introducing blah blah blah... FOR TEACHERS". Depends on where you are though. It's mostly down to what your SMT is like. I've heard tale of a school that gave special hardware/software specific training to teachers, for something they didn't even have it at the time. When they DID get it, it was exclusively used by support staff who received no training at all because "there was no money for it". Disclaimer: Anecdote is second-hand. I know and trust the person who told me. No clue what the training was for...
witch Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Yes, of course this happens - I suppose I was speaking more generally. I don't think it is all down to the unions though - SLT often seem to think about their "staff" meaning teachers - and often TAs too In fact, now I think about it, the admin staff get training as well. Just IT left out then
X-13 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Just IT left out then There's only so much training you can provide for the dark arts... Plus, I don't think schools want to be summoning the Old Ones just to provide SQL training.

mthomas08 Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Whilst I agree with your statement, in the UK education system, if you are not a member of the teaching staff, you will find very little help to change your working conditions. A union can only do so much for 1 person, you'd need to have thousands (if not tens or hundreds of thousands) willing to stand up and strike and assist with the change, and frankly, too many are timid, bullied or dont want to rock the boat for fear of losing their jobs. We are easily replaced in the education system unfortunately Exactly and with the way Support staff are treated "You are easily replaced" tends to be the attitude. There is little we can do except all quit education which isn't going to happen.
sted Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 I'd be very happy with a bit of Dusk Arts training - or even the Late Afternoon Arts the problem to a degree is training in what its an ever changing field. Ive managed to get a course booked for powershell but thats the first in years usually i end up teaching myself as i have with bat/vbs/html and so on. It is getting to the point even in schools where you need to be less a generalist and more a specialist in x with other specialists in y to get the same stuff done that used to be one persons job
