I genuinely don't get it. By the time the auction ends, and the seller ships the item, and then it gets delivered to you, new quids'll be everywhere.

They were delivered to Banks and Post Offices yesterday, which means that from today, pretty much every large franchise (especially supermarkets) are going to have them. If you so desperately want to get your hands on one, go buy a tin of beans with a tenner.

@Garacesh I think it's more the wrongly dated ones you want to look out for.

 

Still don't see why it's worth two and a half grand.

Also, why is 2016 so 'rare'? Coins are stamped the date they're manufactured, not the date the enter circulation, right? Why wouldn't there be a tonne of 2016 coins going around? The Mint has been making them for a while now.

They've been minting 3 million per day, so, yeah, there's gonna be a heck of a lot of 2016 ones around!

My bank didn't have any at all today. When I asked the lady behind the counter she wasn't even sure they had ordered any pound coins this week. :(

That's my thinking too.

Scammers be scamming? Is 'rare 2016' just like the 'misprinted upside-down' fivers?

Tales from the coalface:

 

Cash tills have slots to separate coins. The new £1 cannot be kept with the old one as it is a different weight.

 

Major supermarket chain employing a family member has had to decide to leave a coin out of their tills to accommodate the new £1 until mid October. So that's 2p coins out and new £1 in.

 

It's driving everyone nuts on day 1 including the people operating the tills. The checkout staff would rather dump the £2 coin that nobody seems to want in change and that they have very few of.

These things are only counterfeit proof if they're checked properly.

 

A colleague of my daughter accepted a tenner the other day that looked like it had been printed on 80gsm A4. Daughter was horrified as it was so blatantly fake.

 

Like the old pound coin, people don't know what to look for.

If you can make it, someone else can too. Nothing's "counterfeit-proof", though I reckon the Mirror's exaggerating. Royal Mint probably opted for some open-ended fluff about how it's the most sophisticated and hard to counterfeit coin they've ever made, but I doubt they actually said "counterfeit-proof" (and if they did, they need to fire their PR manager)

 

It's not hard to make a mould of something and make crude copies. And that's probably what's happened here. It's an unsophisticated mould that lacks some of the detail, but that'll change in due course. Even this crude copy would pass in most places, I reckon. Local corner shop, off license, supermarket, etc. A lot of counterfeit £1's for now will probably piggyback on counterfeit £2 methods.

 

I've still not actually had one of the new quids. But then again, I don't usually deal with cash.

I did have one a few days ago where the hologram like thingy didn't seem to work - I wonder

 

It can be really hard to see. You have to angle the coin 'just so' in the right light.

Do the proofs have holograms? if not it might have been worth more than £1

I wonder if the automatic tills at the Tesco by college will be handing out the old £1 after the 15th October? Every day this week I have received on old £1 as part of my change. Last week I had trouble getting an old £1 into one till.
