Moodle: Who is using it, what do you think, could you use it better?

I had a long chat with some colleagues today about Moodle use these days, and I'm interested to hear feedback. Do you have Moodle in your school? How do you get on with it? Do your teachers engage with it well or not?

 

Just really interested to hear general feedback.

Installed it 3 months ago, not had time to develop it to train staff on using it, staff still using Fronter. Most if them don't even know it exists. Baby steps ay

We do and most of the staff use it extensively, although as with any system there are degrees of competence. Some go the whole hog and only accept work submissions through it, and mark student's work in it too (proper paperless courses), while others just use it as a dumping ground for resources (like a networked mounted directory). This year SMT really pushed paperless courses. There was a pilot to run more of them, and teachers who signed up got an iPad. Drop out of the pilot, and the iPad was taken away. SMT monitored this pilot very closely and the paperless courses will continue.

 

There is a push to encourage staff to do more and cleverer things with it, and we have some moodle mentors who teachers can contact for assistance. The mentors run workshops too. Takeup of the workshops has been very poor, as has teachers contacting the mentors. I think this is going to change; I've heard there will be a compulsory session at the next inset day. Most teachers come and ask me about moodle problems, as I am sysadmin. I keep pointing out, that I don't actually use moodle and they are better off seeing the mentors but still they come. To be fair, I can assist them with most problems.

We use it.

We have teachers who have all their courses on it, ART and MFL, and departments who use the bare minimum.

 

Our ICT department do all their homeworks through it and love the marking and gradebooks.

 

It is all down to the individual teachers and how hard SMT push it really.

We have it but are transitioning away from it moving to sites constructed with Google Apps for Edu. Why use free software when you can give kids data to some giant tax evading corporation to help them better sell adverts.

Media, Psychology and distance learning use it extensively, not sure anywhere else in the school knows it exists.

 

We also use Edmodo for ICT and Business and SAM Learning for English and Humanities.

 

I have nothing to do with it other than maintaining the server it resides on.

Used it back when I was in Shrewsbury College all it ever did was cause problems for us! Though apparently things have improved but due to bad experiences don't think I'd ever use it here.

So you have three broadly similar solutions in place offering the same facilities?

Yes...

 

The 'Factions' involved had a meeting, I wasn't invited, and decided they couldn't agree on a solution and they would administer their own preferred solution.

 

I'm not thrilled by it, but its not really any skin off my nose.

 

It's a whole load less grief than the LEA supplied Fronter whose end of contract prompted 'The VLE wars'.

We use it and is used pretty well by nearly all departments and really well by a few. Used FROG (few years back) in the last school again used pretty well and had one teacher come from another FROG school and said they found Moodle slightly easier to use once they got going. Our SLT add things like this to there QA (Quality Assurance Meetings) are you using it if not why not and set it as Target. Also do surveys of students and did one for Moodle very positive feed back from students which helped drive Moodle use by departments a little more.
