featured_spectre Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Ok, I am a member of a few forums, and this topic has come up a lot recently. If there was a global EMP (such as the style of the TV show Revolution), how would you cope and what would you do?
featured_spectre Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Nah...thinking long term. What could you do? Do you have any training that would be useful in that situation. First aid, carpentry, smithing, hunting etc. And this isn't a plug for my ebook either. The tension with the crimea situation could escalate and something *could* happen. Just a what if.
Tesla Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I would be in trouble, i'm not very hands on with anything at all other than computers.... 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I'd find a survivalist, kill him/her and steal their stuff But them I'm lazy 1
featured_spectre Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 I'd find a survivalist, kill him/her and steal their stuff But them I'm lazy Surely it would be better to negotiate living with them and learning from them? (though I like your style! haha)
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Nah! I'm fairly competent, just lazy. Plus whichever survival nut i choose as victim would probably want to be in charge and that's never gonna happen! 1
X-13 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 how would you cope and what would you do? Wait for the BOFHs to image new servers and restore from tape and turn on one of my various old machines. An EMP would do [censored] all. 2
featured_spectre Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 You know an EMP would cripple anything electronic, whether its on or off right?

laserblazer Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I'd try and get to one of these tribes that are still living without technology because they will be the survivors. 2
featured_spectre Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Whilst I liked dark angel, they still had full on electricity, even though it was "post apocalyptic". I chose revolution, because they have small pockets of it due to the pendant things they have.
Miscbrah Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 ^ That's an ace idea. I dunno. No real skills except martial arts tbh. We'd need an EduGeek survival team I reckon, then we can roam the highways in big V8s like Mad Max. Drive south to north, pick up EduGeekers and guns and tins, remote Scottish island, farm animals and crops, raid mainland for tech/solar etc, profit?
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I chose revolution, because they have small pockets of it due to the pendant things they have. Yeah I hate that...
X-13 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 You know an EMP would cripple anything electronic, whether its on or off right? Servers are encased in what is effectively a faraday cage. They'll be safe. Also: Electromagnetic Pulse - EMP Myths - futurescience.com There is truth to this recommendation (if there were a way to know that a burst was about to happen). Equipment is more vulnerable if it is operating, because some failure modes involving E1 HEMP trigger the system's energy to damage itself. However, damage can also happen, but not as easily, to systems that are turned off. [Taken with a huge grain of salt.] In conclusion: An EMP would do [censored] all.
Garacesh Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 (edited) No electricity is an easy one in the short term. Check the circuit breakers to put power back on. They've not been tripped. Odd. Check your mobile phone and realise you have no signal or mobile internet connection, realise something's wrong. Panic. Calm down and check again. Still nothing. Turn it off. It's useless to you right now. Intend to check back later. Consult neighbours. Find they have same issues. Assume localised power cut. Eat your perishable foods first, fruits and the like. The power might come back on. Might not. Don't open your fridge or freezer until you have to. 24 hours pass. Still no power. Turn on phone. Still nothing. Attempt to drive/walk elsewhere to see if anywhere else has power. Find nothing. [GET MUGGED. GAME OVER]. Return home. Fill bathtub with water. The water supply is likely still clean, but I can't promise it will stay that way. Unfortunately we'd be on limited supplies of water, so bathing wouldn't really be top priority at the time. Run out of perishable food. Consider heading to $localSupermarket. They won't have power either. Go anyway and hope. Join in with the looting, because you need food. Take cans of food, bottles of water and salt (thanks @edutech4schools for pointing out salt). Ignore non-necessities such as alcohol/tobacco. Consider washing powder, but only if you have the space for it. Consider pharmacies for basic painkillers and other medicines. Check mobile phone again. Still no signal or internet. Turn off again. Consider self-defence mechanisms. People who have less stuff will probably want your stuff. People who have more stuff will probably want your stuff, too. Start collecting any refuse water you can (water used for washing dishes and the like) and use it to water plants to grow a few perishable foods (tomatoes, cucumbers, something like that). Hydroponics would be amazing if you could find a way to keep your fish alive (what do fish even eat, besides fish flakes?) Consider making contact with (geographically) close friends and family. Holing up together could be beneficial. After that, I'm not too sure. Eventually your tins of food and bottles of water would run out and the supermarket would be empty by then. You'd need to find a farm or similar but in all likelihood by then everything would have been stolen or the farmer has a shotgun and won't let you get close. Not sure what I would do after that. My plan would only really get you a week or so. Edited March 17, 2014 by Garacesh
edutech4schools Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Join in with the looting, because you need food. Take cans of food and bottles of water. Add salt to your list. salt deficiency symptoms especially cramping are likely to develop within a few days. To prevent this, 6 or 8 grams of salt (about 1/4 oz, or 1/2 tablespoon) should be consumed daily in food and drink. If little or no food is eaten, this small daily salt ration should be added to drinking water.
Bompalompalomp Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I'd do a Bob's Burgers and steal some prepper's food. All I have in the way of skills is "workplace" first aid and amateur lockpicking. Which is guaranteed to be useful when there's a shortage of bricks and windows... Not.
Garacesh Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Add salt to your list. Extremely valid point. I'm too used to getting enough salt from my food, but in this situation we'd be rationing. amateur lockpicking Are you kidding? If there was ever a use for Lockpicking, this would be it
localzuk Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 A few key things I'd look for, longer term: Wood - fuel for fire, also to turn into charcoal for water filtering. Salt - Preservative for meats, necessary to survive also Fire starting equipment - flint and steel ideal Food - its everywhere really, but we're very fussy when its in abundance. To be honest, individually you've not got a huge chance of survival if society collapses. What's more likely is small groups form which can survive much easier.
X-13 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Are you kidding? If there was ever a use for Lockpicking, this would be it I know, right. Become an agent of discord by stealing SOME food without breaking anything...

If there was ever a use for Lockpicking, this would be it Eh, enclosed rooms maybe, but in these scenarios you'd be better off with a brick or some boltcutters. Stealth's optional! ... And I'm not the speediest.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I'm still for killing those people who were prepared. Hell you could even eat them first and get to their food later.
localzuk Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I'm still for killing those people who were prepared. Hell you could even eat them first and get to their food later. Only if you want to get Kuru...
