Bradlys Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 So, @Ephelyon is coming down to my flat today to teach me about servers. If I don't respond to this thread in 4 days. I am confirmed dead.

Oaktech Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Is this one of those eSafety messages... You know "If you are meeting someone from online in real life, tell someone where you are going and what time you expect to be back" I hope you are also meeting in a public place!
hardtailstar Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 resists to comment something naughty...... 999 on stand by....
Oaktech Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 resists to comment something naughty...... What? Like, "make sure you have condoms?"
Bradlys Posted March 14, 2014 Author Posted March 14, 2014 You guys are so mean! but yes. This is me saying I might die. 1
Ephelyon Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I, erm... don't think there's going to be any need for condoms. I've had the e-safety talk with him. I'd say posting it is a good thing for accountability as well. @Bradlys, you should inform a trusted person locally as well so others know, helps with safeguarding. 1

I'm sure you'l get my flatmate first. My rooms closest to the door
strawberry Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I, erm... don't think there's going to be any need for condoms. Disappointing attitude. What if you both start to feel hot and need to find a release for the tension that's building? Surely exchanging some fluids safely would be ideal? WATER FIGHTTT!!!!!!
hardtailstar Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 We mock because we care! oh im in the wrong place...... Yes, yes we do care...
Ephelyon Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 No water fights with servers around! Geeky weekend full of AD and Group Policy I expect... And D&D with my lot again next weekend. There do seem to be certain themes to my social life... xD
X-13 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 No water fights with servers around! Geeky weekend full of AD and Group Policy I expect... Sounds like you're pulling out all the stops. You really know how to make a geek feel loved.
Ephelyon Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) You really know how to make a geek feel loved. Well, naturally. And you can deploy condoms through GPP too (making sure to tick the user context option). Edited March 14, 2014 by Ephelyon
X-13 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Well, naturally. And you can deploy condoms through GPP too (making sure to tick the per-user option). "Apply once and do not reapply." 1
Ephelyon Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 "Stop processing items in this extension if an error occurs"... and "remove this item when it no longer applies" (translated, it might say something different).
elsiegee40 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 * Says nothing, just looks at individuals concerned and shakes head * It's usually sufficient
abillybob Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 I have literally no idea what this is going on about but I am shocked by the sexual refernces in this professional forum... tut tut!

elsiegee40 Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 And about the EduMums keeping an eye on things! 1
Ephelyon Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) * @elsiegee40 combines Techie Glare and CoG Glare to forge Teacher Glare* * @Ephelyon droops and runs away...* Actually going down there is only in play because I'm dropping an actual old server off to learn on. Otherwise I'd deliver the lot via Skype I expect. This is along the lines of an idea I floated with Chris at EICE about introducing a form of mentoring/buddy system to support new/lone techs. There's a sense, @Bradlys, in which I'm "using" you a little bit here as I'd like examples of case studies to show that it could work. There, that's now pretty much my full hand on the table. @Bradlys has no form of on-site server setup at his place and the idea would be to develop a skillset with implementing that, to benefit his employer in the short-term and to make him more employable in the long-term. Although there are (costly) training options available for this, we all know they're often inaccessible to those places with smaller budgets and/or a limited recognition of why they might be necessary. I think that collaborating to support/train each other is something we already do via EduGeek and formalising that a little more into peer mentoring/buddying could be interesting. It would also be important for mentors to have co-supervision with each other, as some potential mentees could be in quite stressful situations. And about the EduMums keeping an eye on things! Mentioned it to @witch a couple of weeks ago, partially for that purpose Edited March 14, 2014 by Ephelyon
witch Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 You are doing a good thing. and good luck to you. We are just teasing I have benefited from help from other techs - both in person and virtual. I would love some training on anything tech as I have never had any of any sort. Anyone want to combine a few days in lovely Dorset with a bit of training or mentoring? 2
