ChrisH Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I thought I would make a new thread for more general filtering issues such as kent.dl.sourceforge.net (or any other download mirror) not being reclassified which means we can't download from sourceforge. You can request a reclassification at Take A Look Inside Our Internet Filter and Antivirus Databases - Lightspeed Systems if the site is in a locked category. I will check first thing tomorrow to see if anything has changed otherwise....
synaesthesia Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 There is a good reason Sourceforge is flagged though... it's nasty. It's now only one step better than download.com and it's lovely installer, or softpedia and it's gauntlet run of fake download buttons. 2
ChrisH Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 There is a good reason Sourceforge is flagged though... it's nasty. It's now only one step better than download.com and it's lovely installer, or softpedia and it's gauntlet run of fake download buttons. I have never had any issues with sourceforge in all the time I have been using it and it hosts many popular projects such as 7 zip etc, so for me it's essential to have access to these different projects.
ChrisH Posted March 12, 2014 Author Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) Funnily enough download.com is not filtered ! Also after further experimentation it seems it only 7 zip is filtered and other items are available so it's not as bad as I thought. Edited March 12, 2014 by ChrisH
SimpleSi Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Great idea Chris I've submitted Euxton Primrose Hill Primary School as its classed as Ads - lets see how long it takes to get actioned to save me having to unblock manually in each school in lancashire Simon
synaesthesia Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Google sourceforge, and you'll find out why it's classified bad across most filters, spam blacklists etc due to recent changes. You'll see countless OSS folks have removed their wares from SF for the same reasons.
SimpleSi Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 Got email at 15:12 saying Euxton Primrose Hill Primary School has been placed into education category So thats an excellent response time for a simple request Simon

jhothersall Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 We will get the odd things that will be blocked, but overall I believe it is a better system. The main problem has been changing all the proxy setting. Mine came into close 20 different systems and still learning of new ones like Lexia Learningtoday. 1

SimpleSi Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Spoke to Martin at OCL - the site is showing classfied as Education now at primrosehillschool.org.uk Website Details but still blocked as "ads" is school he is contacting Mr Lightspeed Simon
ChrisH Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 The county list wont be synchronised with the master list.
SimpleSi Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 You should get a job with ocl/lightspeed That was exact reason- sync had failed. They've manually done it and going to fix the auto sync My site now available across Cleo land Simon
LukeC Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Google Translate is also blocked and can not be overridden by admins. OCL are looking into the issue
Edu-IT Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 That is because it can be used to bypass the filter.
browolf Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 cannot get appstore through our proxy with lightspeed even tho it worked before. seems apple is telling our ipads to download apps from other devices in other schools inside the lancashire network even tho those ips are inaccessible. Going to make the guest network proxyless so people can get apps that way.
Jwzg Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 That is because it can be used to bypass the filter. It actually is a proxy. One of our students didn't get a filtering policy the other day and was using it to search "suck my $:%#" in Spanish.
SimpleSi Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 (edited) Anyone managed to get it setup so that a user can override the blocking ? I tried doing this Creating Overrides - Lightspeed Systems Rocket -Lightspeed's Support Wiki which got me to here Sorry, the requested site is not accessible. Please login to the web filter form more options. Login but when I tried to login just got this Please Login... There are no end user authentication sources defined. So much stuff is blocked so I need a method for teachers to easily unblock as its severely impacting teaching at the moment Nightmare having to do this across 6 schools! Simon Edited March 18, 2014 by SimpleSi
ChrisH Posted March 18, 2014 Author Posted March 18, 2014 At a guess you would have to go to administration and add an authentication source of local database but I bet this would either break everything completely or mean everyone will have to log on with the username and password. Either way I probably wouldn't attempt it at this stage.
NikChillin Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Personally, I find the reporting a bit of a pain. Before you select the criteria for the report you want it has already started a default report, this means you can end up waiting hours for a report.

Before you select the criteria for the report you want it has already started a default report, this means you can end up waiting hours for a report. Our reports are pretty fast at the moment, only taking a few seconds to compile.
SimpleSi Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Another issue surfaced today At one school, the sec checks national lottery (something to do with PTFA or something) and its blocked under gambling and there doesn't seem to be any way of unblocking it that I can find Home | The National Lottery - home of Lotto, EuroMillions and Instant Wins Is this true? It doen't make a lot of sense since other lottery sites are not classed as gambling but my point is that surely in this day and age, a school should be able to unblock something like this on an admin only network. Simon
mkennedy02 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Has anyone else managed to get the 'Blocked Search Keywords' option working? There are currently 3 'lists' created, a staff one - assigned to the Admin network, a student one - assigned to the Curric network and a global one - assigned to Admin and Curric. I set the word 'carrot' (thought it was a more neutral word than 'porn' when testing) to be blocked in all 3 lists, but everyone can still search for carrot... Don't know if it's just something that I've missed...
SimpleSi Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Just tried it on our student list and it works I created a new list with word carrot in it and then in rule sets-students - search engines - just below the main box - you have to tick to select the list you've created Simon
SimpleSi Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Laugh is if you search for carrotsex - it doesn't filter it
