Just copying and pasting a bit from this thread where @witch and I discussed the idea of an EduChoir and a poll was proposed.

 

I'm wondering who'd be interested in forming/joining an EduChoir. We all do stressful jobs and singing together releases endorphins and gets people feeling better (looking at the work done by Gareth Malone on the Military Wives Choir and "Boys Don't Sing"). We could have regional "cells" that rehearse locally (same material) and meet up centrally for the annual EduGeek conference to entertain the rest.

 

If people are willing to do a bit of travelling there could be two-weekly or monthly rehearsals for areas defined by EduGeek populations - could @ZeroHour (sorry for the double-mention) help with drawing up some sort of "heat map"? I've seen a global one on the EduGeek stand but is there a more fine-grained, national version available?

 

The advantage of choral singing is that individuals don't have to be brilliant. They just need to be able to hold a tune, which for 9 out of 10 people is a skill that can be taught, if not learned simply through having fun together with a good conductor/coach at the helm.

 

Who'd be up for that?

I'm up for it. It's a long time since my choral days...and I'm not sure how my tuning is these days.

Tuning can be refined @elsiegee40 It will soon come back! @Andrew_C Almost nobody is actually tone deaf - you probably just need a couple of lessons

With the previous threads on EduGuitar and EduDrums I think a backing group would be sorted as well! Now for the name..Techs Aloud?

I think there are other advantages to it too. Many of us have complained that we don't get to meet up very often. Having some sort of local/regional "excuse" to meet up could remedy that. You've got a purpose for being there, which helps, but it could come with a social before/after to swap tips and best practice in person as well.

As much as I'd love an activity like this, I'll sit out on singing. I know it's often customary to have someone out of tune in many choirs but I'd take the biscuit a bit - sounding like the death rattle of a Cortina's holey exhaust pipe whilst it's being driven across a muddy field!

As I said, very few people are actually tone deaf! Even if you think you can't sing, you can hum a long note, almost as if you were an instrument. I've seen it done, it is really good

I'm one of those very few! I've always loved the idea of singing but aways been terrible. So when offered the chance to work with a couple of top top vocal coaches at university it was proven that, whilst I may be a superb live sound technician, singing is one area I shall never be good at!

Rather than a choir, why not have a CHOIP (CHoir Over Internet Protocol)? Video conference rehearsals and get together for a performance.

Haha, alas I think mixed room acoustics, lag and frequency loss would form some slight barriers there... =]
