We use (jbloggs) for both staff and students. As highlighted above, it helps with child protection issues (we are an all girls school, but that's not the point). This is their logon name and email address. We have OU's for each year and roll over during holidays. We have overseas students that have a 'preferred name', we use that as the username/email and add their real name as an alias to their email (should a member of staff get confuddled).

What do people do with double-barrel (with hyphen or space) and surnames with a ' (O'Neill for example)? If you prescribe to our format, what would Sally O'Neill and Samantha Mee-Stanton have as username/email address?

For the sake of simplicity, I strip all funny characters out now. O'Neill becomes ONeill, Mee-Stanton would become MeeStanton. Causes too much grief with various systems if you leave them in, even though Windows can handle them.

Same here.

For me staff are just full names for example Alex Bill, and students are like this Alex10Bill the number in the middle corresponds to their intake year!

I quite like this format as it uses the student name and shows year group.

We use:

Students: e.g. - 13robertsa (Year Joined, Surname, 1st initial of first name)

Staff: e.g. - janderson (1st Initial of first name, surname)

For students, makes it easier knowing from quick glace on what year group they are in and where their profile is stored. + Makes it easier for Students and Staff to remember usernames

Staff are jbloggs and students are 08nathanz.

08 being the year of entry, then their first name, then the first letter of their last name.

Staff are j.bloggs and students are a 4 digit code starting with the last digit of the year they started (3xxx for our current year 7s) which becomes their candidate number.

Staff are just jbloggs and students get two digit starting year with their first initial and surname I.e 12jbloggs

I always strip out apostrophes and hyphens as well. Keeps it simple!

joe.bloggs

or joe.bloggs1 for duplicates.

they have enough trouble remembering that, I can't imagine the chaos with a random number!

Same here. It used to be jbloggs but with the duplicates and tracking down of users i've now changed it to joe.bloggs with a number for duplicates.
