deploy windows store apps

does anybody know away to deploy windows store apps to all users, currently looking into creating a student image win8.1 on suface pro

 

also are they any major obstacles that any of you had to overcome in your deployments

Hi, have you looked into Cisco's mdm? Meraki ? I believe you can deploy via that. Or lightspeeds mdm

I ran into the exact same issue you're having right now about 2 months ago. After about 3 days solid of looking into it I came to the conclusion that mdm is the best and I'm pretty sure only way. If it's less than 60 surfaces I would also consider doing it manually. It may go faster than you think.

could you let us know how you are doing this with the meraki MDM solution. Are you talking about the windows store apps? i thought these were per-user install as opposed to per computer install?

Meraki MDM does not have the ability to deploy Windows Store apps. I asked about it on the Meraki stand at BETT and they weren't even sure if it was on the development roadmap.

Hi,

I did look at that but it just doesn't answer the questions properly due to the lack of per computer installed. The problem comes when you have institution owned devices that are shared by students. If an app has been identified and need to be rolled out to tablets it should be easier for us IT administrators to send that out and be ready for the students to use the app rather than they have to install it etc. I think this really need to be addressed if we're use to fully use the metro touch screen apps in a major way.

You can do it with System Center, but even this has caveats:

 

1. If you're not already using System Center, it's a massive and complicated sledgehammer that you'll need to set up to crack the nut of app installs (probably on a new virtual server, let's be honest)

2. It still means the user has to have a Microsoft account set up.

3. It still doesn't silently deploy, each user has to tap install.

 

Admittedly those last two aren't much different from iOS, but it's far from ideal.

We already use system centre for things like end point etc, and only just starting to look into the app allocation process havent used it yet. Didnt realise its going to be as bad as IOS and that you need user intervention to install the app.

 

Possibly a back to the drawing board situation then.

I need the Windows Store Apps - A Deployment Guide for Education document about a month ago... I heard from about 5 people at MS and all of them said bits and parts of this document but none had all of this information. It is nice it is finally all put together but this should have been released on RTM day of Windows 8.1... Come on MS get your sh.t together.
