We are looking at upgrading our backbone and server room switches from Netgear GS724TS to something with a bit more throughput such as HP 1910-48G showing 104Gbs. Can anyone recommend this switch or another switch that would suite the bill. We would like high throughput, 48 x 1GB Copper ports and room for 4 SPF modules. We can get the 1910 for £350 and the modules for £135 so something similar price would be great but we can stretch to £1,000 for the 1 switch and 2 modules if need be. PotNoodleTech Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 The 1910-48g is a good cheap edge switch but I am not sure I'd reccomend it as a backbone. I'm guessing this is a primary school? In which case you could probably get away with it, but it is not future proofed for hundreds of devices. Also - they're huge, make sure you have a big cabinet, and they're noisy, make sure it isn't in a classroom.

Chris_Cook Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 If you need to do routing on it, you probably want something beefier. We have some in our server rack and they haven't missed a beat in three years. 1 for iscsi, one for vmotion and one for the main network with a lacp link to the core. I wouldn't use one for a core switch except in an emergency. Still miles better than anything I've tried from netgear though.
3s-gtech Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 We used them as an interim core on a basic flat network with 500+ PCs. They were fine (more than fine, great value and quick), but I wouldn't recommend them for that role.

snoerre Posted February 12, 2014 Posted February 12, 2014 (edited) Beware, the V1910 has a ARP table limit of 256 == more than 256 concurrent network devices / IPs will NOT work on the whole switch. - If you do not need routing: Take a look at HP ProCurve Switch 2530-48G, 52-Port, managed (J9775A) With 4 pieces of 1000BaseSX SFP compatible optics, it will be still under 1000,-€ with VAT. - If you need routing: Take a look at a "HP renew"ed HP E4800 / HP A5500-EI Edited February 12, 2014 by snoerre
