Posted on the technical forum last week about PMX. Thought I'd search the web to see if anyone had posted anything anywhere else about it, and discovered that a user on another forum (techonce.net) that has copied my entire post virtually word for word with a few of their own additions. Seems very bizarre to me - why would anyone want to do that? (No replies there either! :-) )

Was your post a question or a solution? If a solution, I see this all the time; people try to build up a persona online and some of them will claim to be IT pros when in actual fact they just copy and paste their answers from elsewhere online. Seen lots of bad advice given out because of folk like this, they'll post a "solution" to the wrong problem which ends up making matters worse for the OP.

 

If yours was a question then I'm stumped - maybe they just wanted someone to talk to! :)

Unfortunately it's quite common since it requires very little effort on the plagiarists part and it generates traffic to their website.

Cheeky git (him, not you!). Nuke him from orbit, it's the only language they understand.

It was a request for opinions on PMX, which was what made it an odd thing to copy. Not really bothered about plagiarism, but just seemed a strange thing to do.

TechOnce isn't a proper forum. It looks like all of the content has been automatically scraped from other websites (and not very well at that!).

 

If you look at the links under View more random threads, you'll see a lot of threads that have been copied from EduGeek. That fact that usernames like @localzuk, @sonofsanta and @Domino are listed is a dead giveaway. :)

I'm not sure what can be done about it? Perhaps @Dos_Box can block TechOnce? :confused:

Doing a Google search for sonofsanta site:techonce.net does bring up a couple of pages of results, but some of the copied posts are oddly garbled, e.g:

I take it as read that popular or controversial posts will be bounded about... take it as a compliment! I do when I see one of my moans appear elsewhere... to which I duly oblige by setting up a random account and informing them this exact reply wad posted on EG with the post date...

They've done a particularly terrible job of the scraping, and attributing the posts to random usernames is just plain weird: Thanks to Domino from:

 

blocking them from accessing the site may be a temporary fix, but an IP change would get them round it. even just the accessing IP...
