How does it work in your school?

 

At the moment i'm tempted to buy some cheapo laptops and bang them on the wall behind the lcd screens. Then use either a website or a startup script to run a presentation.

 

At the moment no solution wants to offer us all of what we want:

- internet connection

- centralised distrubtion of presentation.

- centralised input

you can get away with one machine and a video splitter if the screens are near each other.

 

If they are 2 screens in the same entrance hall/ dining hall etc. then hide an old machine with a basic windows installation and your powerpoint launched at startup. And distribute to the screens using a video splitter.

I find suspended ceilings are great for hiding equiptment like this, and wireless points etc

If you are happy with a single PC running a PowerPoint or such then take alook at VGA Over CAT5e. For example you can get a VGA over CAT5e switch that will send the VGA signal to receivers that plug into your remote display.

For one or two screens PC's/laptops hidden away will do it.

 

You can buy LCD's with PC's built in but I wouldn't recommend it, as if one of the other goes wrong you are a bit stuck.

 

Another option is a proper centralised system, this is better for bigger numbers of screens as you can control them remotely, change what they display according to time, push video and text etc. These work by having a media box (usually quite small) plugged into the LAN and the screen.

Has anyone had success with Infojection - any tips? I want a staff room display that will show notices and current information, mainly from our VLE.

I have most of my stuff on a locally hosted Moodle VLE but would like to display live web pages and video too.

 

I'll be using Ubuntu linux as the O/S.
