Lots of projectors require unbolting from the ceiling to clean the filters, to do this requires two hands and therefore precludes the use of ladder. HSE rules mean that you need three points of contact on the ladder. This means a tower is needed. Take a look at the HSE requirements for the use of mobile towers. Apparently it applies to the tiny mobile ones as well.

90% of work related injuries are due to working at heights - the head/governors could be personally liable with a prison sentence if someone was injured.

I did the ladder/tower/manual lifting courses and can happily say that I've not had the displeasure of cleaning a projector since I learned what was required (the school won't cough up for the equipment)

Suggest getting a to get a contractor in to clean them.

it dosent take long imo.last week of the month, i will do 10 a day. i dont use compressed air, it sometimes can make the dust and fluff go damp making it stick more. I use lung power, for that reason why i only do 10 a day.

I did once do them all in 1 afternoon and it sent me a little lite headed

When do you get the chance to do 10 projectors a day?

i can do most of them in a day or 2 during the school holidays if i have another person with me and keys to other parts of the building..but not during normal school hours.

I know im i trouble when the lights start flashing!

I do it 30 minutes before i leave work.

Preventive maintenance is better than having to take the whole thing down phone the warranty people then package it to send off then wait a week or longer, then put it back up. 2-3 minutes is better than 10 minutes fanny arround and teacher doing with out projector for a week.

doesnt take much time really... does it :)

Now, if i was doing the promethean ones i could do 10 projectors a day. Its the buggers i have to completely take down just to get to the filters...

God i hope my NM doesnt browse this forum!!!

I find it depends on the floor surface in the classroom as carpets make for more fluff and dust in the air. The filters are cleaned once a month regardless of the filter message.

We find that those classrooms with carpets have to be cleaned internally at least twice a year.

Webman has been opening up the projectors and cleaning them and to date has built up a good technique. I am trying to get him on a technical course for this by one of the manufacturers but not got any info at the mo.

Yeh ours are cleaned as and when they get reported.

I used to be regularly asked to clean the filters - even with a class full of children.

Been on the H&S ladders thing also.

CyberNerd is almost correct - its not the head that would be CRIMINALLY LIABLE it would be who ever is doing the work. Its for this reason that I refuse to have anything to do with them. And remember ignorance is not a plea or an excuse.

We bought a very useful gadget...a mini dyson hoover! works wonders with the filters.

Can you actually do this? For example, how high up are the projectors? Do you need to use a ladder? Have you been on the appropriate H&S courses for working up ladders/at heights. Does the school insurance cover you for doing so?

8O ALl this time Ive been cleaning our 30 odd projectors and I might not have been covered against injury? Ive never thought about that. Our headteacher does everything by the book. Maybe its time I did too. Just been along to the Bursar. Im not doing any more High Level work unless Im covered! :o

Actually if they allow you to go up a ladder without any training etc... and you fall and hurt youself they have no recourse against your legal action because you've had no training.

If they do provide you with the training and you subsequently fall but it's proved to be because you were at fault i.e over leant then you have no legal recourse against them.

Well I say no legal recourse but there probably is.

It just means they are easier to sue if you've not had the training.

Unless you go up the ladder after being told not due to not having training ... then they can sue you for a self-inflicted injury that means you cannot perform your normal daily duties.

At least it is not as extreme as the army ... you can get fined for having sun-burn and locked up for having a tattoo.

Good job I didnt go in the army on both counts. I would have been a repeat offender for the sunburn :?

One of ours started to indicate overheating today, so I proudly got out my mini hoover and the stepladder, then realised that the mini hoover is in actual fact not that mini because the distance between the projector and the ceiling is less than the length of my mini hoover! Also battery lasted about 4 mins. So ended up blowing on it! Top of the projector was v. dusty so think might get one of those jay cloth feather duster thingys that I can dust the top of the projector with from the ground!

I've stripped down many sanyo projectors to clean the lenses internally. We've had quotes of £120 odd to do this work which takes me about 40 mins now. Can do it in 20 if i rush. I dont often get to clean the filters due to being on my own and having hundreds more jobs to do and no time to do them.

We use to use compressed air, but got work to buy a mini compressor, comes in useful for cleaning all computers out, especially laptops that have got a good build up if dust in them!!!!
