Joanne Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Oooohhhh yeah. Didn't even notice that she wasn't on Spotify. I just listen to random playlists on there... I love Spotify.

Joanne Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 https://news.spotify.com/se/2014/11/11/2-billion-and-counting/ Spotify CEO responds to Taylor Swift re: pulling of music Can't argue with that. She does seem a little foolish to be missing out on that piece of pie. I guess it isn't about the money for her though.
localzuk Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I read that this morning. The numbers are pretty clear - Spotify is paying quite a chunk of money to the record labels. The question is, after that stage, how much of that money ends up in the actual artist's pockets, and how much of it ends up being sucked up by the label? I know that I used to pirate all my music. I only ever bought second hand albums if I bought anything. I think the most I ever spent was £2.50. None of that went to the artist, that's for sure. Now? I've been a subscriber to Spotify for over 5 years now, paying £9.99 a month without issue. That's over £600 I've spent that I would never have spent in the past. On top of that, I've discovered new artists via the software that I'd never have found before. I've even went and bought physical albums for those little unknown artists (I've just ordered "Maybe Trapped Mostly Troubled by Tessa Violet", for example) because I want to support them with extra. I'd never have thought of doing that before Spotify appeared.
Joanne Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I've only been subscribing for 4 months, but I love it and feel exactly the same. I haven't downloaded an album illegally for ages!

The question is, after that stage, how much of that money ends up in the actual artist's pockets, and how much of it ends up being sucked up by the label? Have to agree with you both, there. I assume (but do not know for certain) that an artist can find out how much their CD is retailing for (for example, just by checking prices in shops) and work out what cut they're getting. However, agreements with Napster/Pandora/Spotify/Etc are usually conducted behind NDA's AFAIK, so artists don't know if they're getting a decent cut or not.. Sounds more like Ms. Swift should be taking up her beef with her label rather than Spotify, though it's perfectly possible that this is her taking it up with her label. Angry fans + less royalties.. Hit 'em where it hurts - in the pocket!
Tesla Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Been on spotify unlimted for a couple of years now, becoming premium doesn't really appeal to me, i use my laptop /pc around the house, and mobile signal generally in my area isnt great, so using it while out and about is of no use (which you get with premium) My general rule of thumb is i'll get a feel for an album/artist via spotify, and if i really like it, i'll go out and download it off iTunes. If i absolutely love it, i'll go and buy the physical CD for my collection.
Joanne Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I use it on my phone and play it in the car all the time. So for me, it's worth the £9.99 a month. I prefer it to last.fm. Shamefully my favourite playlists are all the Now That's What I Call Music albums on there... all dem playlists!

I've got about 40 hours of music synchronised to my phone at the moment, which I use when travelling.
Tesla Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Ohh, my mistake, i always assumed it downloaded the song as you tried to play it (as per if you were on youtube with an aux cable etc)....
Joanne Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I've set mine to download on 'extreme' quality!! Don't think they've all sync'ed to that level yet, but can't wait to crank up Coldplay - Paradise (just for the intro) used to get a well good buzz off it when in my old car (pretty sure it had bose speakers) and my mp3 player.
localzuk Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Ohh, my mistake, i always assumed it downloaded the song as you tried to play it (as per if you were on youtube with an aux cable etc).... It can do that too if you want to. Its your choice.
Garacesh Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 It can do that too if you want to. Its your choice. So if I got Spotify I could download tracks and put them on my (100% offline) mp3 player? (I don't have unlimited data on my phone, plus I much prefer having individual gadgets)

(I don't have unlimited data on my phone, plus I much prefer having individual gadgets)If your MP3 runs Spotify, yes. You can download them for offline use. 1

(I don't have unlimited data on my phone, plus I much prefer having individual gadgets) The device has to run the Spotify app - so basically it has to be an iPod Touch, android device or Windows Phone (I think?!).
Garacesh Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Oh, bugger ;_; Mine's just a bog-standard MP3 player
Garacesh Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 BBC News - Taylor Swift's record label rejects Spotify figures The plot thickens
localzuk Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Aww, the poor thing. Only half a million dollars from the US market only. How will she manage?
Garacesh Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Whilst I do agree (I'd love half a million...), it's nice to see the opinion from both sides and actual figures being mentioned. Normally I'd expect this to just go. Spotify: "We gave T-Swifty a butt-tonne of money. She's being silly and she'll come crawling back." T-Swift: "Lolno, you gave me bugger all." Spotify: "No we didn't!" T-Swift: "Yes you did!" Repeat ad-infinatum.

Ric_ Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 BTW guys... if you still want your fix of Taylor Swift streaming you can still get it on Play Music All Access Why you wouldn't be listening to Avril Lavign instead, I don't know though.
