UPS - Uninteruptable Power Supplies

I have a little issue with an APC UPS1000I unit.

 

Basically the battery is dead for want of a better word! According to the APC Software it's 4.84 years old!

 

Just wondered if it's worth changing or should we buy a new unit?

It's powering one DC - A Dell Poweredge 1800 and a Dell TFT. That's all.

 

Any Suggestions, Advice, etc....

 

Have looked on Ebuyer.com and the 1500 is £182.82 +vat and a 1000 like we have is £236.92 +vat ish! both are free delivery because it's over £49 if we can wait a week for it.

 

Don't matter really, cos i aint here again till 2 weeks today, altho the have their own technician!

If the power goes off all your clients go off. Therefore the main reason for a UPS on the server is to provide the time for a safe shutdown.

 

Thus my logic is if the UPS can power the server for long enough for this to happen its fit for the job.

We bought new batteries for our 1000 series units and they cost £75 per set from European Electronique. I would go with new batteries.

We've just bought some APC Back-UPS 350s from Insight. £50 including VAT and they work okay with our big Edubuntu server (i.e. our Edubuntu server knows when the power goes off and has time to shut down). They'll power that big server (dual core, 7 harddrives) for a little over 10 minutes.

I avoid the APC ones now after A the leaky battery that said it was fine and no issues despite its acid contents being over the floor in my cupboard and B the fact that if they have an issue they just turn off for safety, not a "safe shutdown" as in "power failure" setup, they literally just go "oh crap im faulty" DEAD so that kinda made me think hmmmmm not good.

 

I am going more for Liebert stuff as it seems fine

The cheapest option is as localzuk said; buy replacement batteries. They aren't even that hard to switch over. We replaced some last Summer term using batteries bought over the counter from Maplin - I think they cost about £50.

of the big four apc seem to have the worst rep for reliability, you can't really go wrong with mge (their part of apc now but the smb kit is still being sold and is good value), eaton or liebert. From what i've heard they've all got better management utilities than apc's powerchute to boot.
