So, I'm busy testing a new image on our Acer laptops (the image I built actually on them, with all the Acer drivers broke the trackpad on them rendering one of our laptop trollies useless) and I come to check that the screen resolution (and a few other things) are set properly now. Nothing unusual you might say, however, when I went to Right Click the Desktop to choose Screen Resolution, I did 2 fingers on the track pad and left click ..

 

It's my own fault as I try to do things remotely these days so everything is in one place and saves physical access to the servers and such, but I'm Mac based so when I don't have my Magic Mouse with me.. Meh, I'm just making excuses now! lol ..

 

What faux pas do others make when working between systems then? Linux terminal commands in windows command line?

Keep typing emails and word documents and hitting the tab key expecting words to auto complete as per Linux cli.

Mines not really between systems but apps.

 

When I switch between apps I forget that some functions don't exist.

 

The classic case is when I switch from the Twitter app to Chrome on my phone, I tend to pull down to refresh the page forgetting I have to press the refresh instead.

I do that between Twitter and Edugeek.

 

I also try to do menu-button > refresh when going from Edugeek to Twitter...

I often find vi commands in the middle of quick notes that I'm typing into notepad.

I get extremely pissed off that I can't highlight text, and click left/right together to get the text pasted to where the cursor is. Ctrl/C Ctrl/V is so outdated.

I get quite pissed off that I have to double click.

Go to log onto a linux server at root via the KVM (smoothwall, VLE) and automatically press Ctrl-Alt-Del. Restarting them.

 

I now have passwords set on the KVM for linux servers to stop me being stupid.

Its when I'm not using my text editor (textmate) or my terminal with the nicer font and colors.

 

CMD+C and Ctrl+C mess with me the most, especially when I RDP from my macbook and my brain is in mac mode but I need to use the windows keyboard shortcuts.

My two most common ones:

- Hitting 'space' in Windows and expecting a Quick Look window to appear

- Hitting 'enter' in Windows expecting to rename a file but opening it instead

 

The transposition of the CMD/Win/CTRL keys when RDCing or VNCing between Mac and PCs gets me, too...

When I first started using Apple Macs and I enjoyed using expose and the other functions that OS X provided that windows does not via the F Keys ie F3 etc and being on a windows machine and go to press the Key and it doesn't do anything and then realise I'm not on an apple mac, doh ! * Face Palm *

 

Only other thing I've done is when I am trying to work on multiple laptops etc and have a USB Mouse connected to my laptop and other laptops near me and I try to do something on the other laptops and use my mouse and wonder why the mouse cursor on which ever other laptop is not moving and then about 10 seconds later I click and realise it's due to my own user error and that it's the mouse for my work laptop.

Do you have two keyboards and mice or a KVM switch? When I used to have two machines (with KVM) I always seemed to be on the "wrong" one when I was trying to do something.

I have a notepad++ macro that searches the file for instances of :wq and removes them.

Guilty, except I've moved my (very physical, as in it's in my hand!) mouse down to the bottom of my screen and expect it to appear on the top of the screen of the laptop I'm currently working on..
