I am looking to create VLANs at some point and we need some POE ports as well for our wireless AP's So what HP switch should I go for?

I've installed quite a number of HP 2910 and HP 2920 48 port switches with PoE/PoE+. These have a switch capacity of 176Gbps to give you a comparative. They're not silent, but they're not really noisey either 2
sonofsanta Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 I would say the HP-A5120 (rebranded 3COM) switches are perfectly capable devices - JG237A is the PoE 48 port model - but they're not silent (though three of them in the cab two foot from me is only a quiet whoosh of air).

timbo343 Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) Ive got a few of the 2530 series and they are decent switches. You wont go wrong with them for setting up vlans for wireless. PotNoodleTech Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 V1910 POE series are not quiet. I've got lots of V1910-24-POE+ and they're pretty loud. I've got some 2530 48G POE+ on the way so it'll be interesting to see if they're quieter or louder than the V1910s.

Yes please do report back, the specs say they are 55 decibels loud and the netgears are 45. Will be very interesting to know. Interestingly the 48 port netgear switches are very loud also. The 24 port is silent. God knows what the POE versions are like!

If you are going to compare db, just be aware that 10db difference is about doubly as loud (as humans perceive it), here has some good comparison - Sound Proofing Walls: How Sound is Measured - Welk and Sons Drywall As it's a logarithmic scale two devices of 45db will be 48db, 4 devices will be 51db, 8 will be 54... Dantech Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) I would avoid the v1910 switches like the plague. They are not true HP switches but re-badged 3COM. IF you mess the IP address up I found I could not find the address out with a fluke tester like I could on proper managed switches (these are Smart switches). I found that I had to dig out the only XP laptop with a serial port just to be able to set up a telnet type session using a 9 pin serial lead to talk to the switch(forgotten the name but it was only there on XP). What a pain! Also the switch came with DHCP turned on and killed my network ( I was not expecting this and wondered why some of my other switches stopped working - be careful with this, you should only have one DHCP server on the same subnet). I did not want these switches (but was forced to buy them by the SLT on the advice of a consultant because they were a bit cheaper) because setting up VLAN's on managed switches is so much easier and you can telnet, web manage or use a command line to access them. Every little change to the switch is down via web browser and you have to wait a few seconds for the web page to update - it just takes ages to do. One other major drawback is that they are noisier than the layer2 managed switches and they are enormous. I found I could not actually fit one into an existing wall cabinet which meant I had to change the cabinet just to install it! Check the measurements carefully these switches are twice the size of modern ones. You will be buying old stock when you buy these since 3COM were bought out a number of years ago. I could go on, but I think you can tell I would only use these for one thing - as a weight keeping the server door open as I take boxes in and out! Edited January 25, 2014 by Dantech

tensop Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 (edited) ... - 256 arp limit is only an issue if the switch is doing resolution, which it typically wont be as an edge switch. the only entries it will typically ever contain will be that of any device you use to manage it, an NTP server and a router. it's not a core switch, so dont use it for routing vlanned interfaces in large networks and you wont have ARP problems. use a cisco 3560x, HP A5800 etc for intervlan routing. - these switches do not come with a dhcp server enabled on them - the serial interface is o/s independant - if you 'mess' the ip - then just reset it via the console to factory defaults, or just _cmdline-mode on / 512900 and set the IP again. - 'smart' and 'managed' switches are just marketing BS. - you won't be buying old stock, new HP V1910's are still being made today, yes - they're just rebadged 2952's ala software restricted(and for the most part unlockable) 5120SI's - noise, for their generation they're on par with the noise of other switches with similar feature sets. size wise - the 24/48 ports are tiny, any PoE model will be large and noisier due to the amount of heat generated. HP 2530 Switch Series [ATTACH=CONFIG]22461[/ATTACH] I'd recommend the 2530 switches the gigabit 48port POE switches are pretty good value for money, we have a good number of them as edge switches powering ruckus AP's. The 2920 would be a worthy investment if you have the extra money and where looking to upgrade to 10gig in the future though.
Michael Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 The HP 2530 looks a good alternative, with a switching capacity of 104Gbps but it does lack 10Gbps options (as above). In theory though you could team multiple SFP ports which is a cheaper way of doing it.

DMcCoy Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Switching throughput is usually based on port count, so the Netgear 724T at 48Gb is exactly the same as the 2530 at 104Gb. One is 24x2 for full duplex, the other is 52x2 (48+4SFP). Throughput numbers do need to be considered more carefully for *modular* chassis switches and those with stacking, SFP+ and other 10Gb interfaces. The 2530 and newer procurve switches (been using the 3800s recently) are much better with fan control now, certainly not like the old 2800s and 2900s.

They're great, not had a problem with them, powering VOIP phones and wireless access points. I wouldn't have said they were that noisy. 1

I still don't quite understand how to vlan them, it seems really complicated. I was told the HP switches were very easy to setup with vlans.
caffrey Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 I admit the interface is pretty cumbersome and has changed over revisions (the older switches I need to use an old version of firefox to stop the interface from crashing) The newer ones seem fine. I only run one VLAN for wifi guest access but it works well enough - whether or not I've done it correctly is another story! Of course with these switches being only L2 I can't bridge the VLANS and I need to do that on the smoothwall.
Achandler Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Upgrading switches because you can't understand how to VLAN them seems an odd choice. The Netgear switches you are talking about shoudl be perfectly adequate for your edge switches. From expereince they are almost identical to HPs to VLAN (if using the GUI), you create a VLAN, then Tag, Untag or neither the ports on the switch. Pretty simply really.
timbo343 Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Just going back to the noise of the 2530s. Just powered 2 2530-24Gs up from under the desk. As it stands at the moment they are silent. Can not hear them at all. I literally put my ear to them, cannot hear them.
