we are using twitter in my schools to post short articles (take a pic - add a few words - tweeet - job done) but for some reason this is not working on idevices but fine on 'droids and PCs

Is there some i-specific more urls than I need to unblock to get it working on idevices?

I think pictures are on a separate URL.

On a side note, I would be careful. This weekend I stumbled across a graphic image by mistake...

You will need to unblock twimg.com as this is where the images are stored .However, you should be aware that this url is blocked for a very good reason, it contains unmoderated images that are wholly inappropriate for a school. We have twitter available for some members of staff but it's blocked for the rest of the school.

No problem with images as this is to allow teachers to tweet out from Ipads/pods (Primary schools)

I'll add in that url but I'm not hopeful as the basic ipad twitter app is not connecting at all but like I say 'droids and PCs are fine

Are you filtering the iDevices transparently?

Also, are you using the iDevice app or going through the browser?

Using default twitter app on pads but now you mention it, in using hootsuite app on droid and web based hootsuite on PC(which is bound too work of course)

I'll try different ipad app.

Filtering is via CLEO, I can control URLs but not ports

Hi

Exactly the same issue here and starting to tear out what's left of my hair.

On any idevice, mobile.twitter.com works fine in safari but the twitter app won't show the timeline and just times out with the error "The tweets aren't loading right now - Please tap to retry"

Clearly either the app isn't fully proxy aware or there are different url's in use by the app that I have blocked.

Anyone got a list of url's for the app that need ublocking?

Cheers

Andrew

I don't suppose anyone did finally find a solution to this?

Again, works fine via browsers, but the Twitter App can't connect. Doesn't seem to be logging anything unusual on the FW, so I assume it's a filtering issue....?

Have you run a report on the filter? Filter the results by ip address of an ipad that you have just tried... see what's blocked. If nothing is blocked there is a chance that a port needs opening for it to work... but don't know which ones!!

The twitter app, like many, makes SNI-less connections to twitter over https.

Most filters and proxies don't like this and with good reason.

Your best bet is just to use the browser.

Bear in mind, there is also a lot of questionable content on twitter generally.

Just to put some extra info behind this:

As mentioned, Twitter app connects over 443, but isn't proxy aware, so it can't get out past our proxy. To make it worse, Twitter won't publish IP address destinations so I can't even create a custom/specific route out, and I don't to open 443 for all. Looks like it'll have to be the browser!

twitter.com timg.com twimg.com should be blocked should be in your deny list as this is where the images are stored and again, some of the pictures are not appropriate for a school environment.

The problem in todays society is that all kids have mobile phones, and so, if they want to get on twitter they'l most likely use 3G. Children should not be allowed twitter or facebook, as it causes too many problems and pastorial are always coming to us about it grr
