Oaktech Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 Yeah I have a particular girls name I've loved for years (and the missus now she's got past the geek reference ) - so far, I've never met or even heard of a girl with this name so I'd be gutted if it becomes common in the next couple of years. That's assuming we have a girl of course - if it's a lad I'm scuppered! There will be no further choices for me... My wife has chosen nice welsh names as both of us are of strong welsh stock. We have Ffion Eleanor for a girl and Ioan Griffith for a boy. I got the middle names which are both from my great grandparents.

We have Ffion Eleanor for a girl and Ioan Griffith for a boy. I got the middle names which are both from my great grandparents. My youngest is called Ffion, Ffion Mae to be exact. Nice to see you're spelling it the correct Welsh way, but our Ffion's teachers always had a problem with the double-F. I think it's a beautiful name, and she's grown into a beautiful young woman, too, but I would say that, wouldn't I? All grown-up now, 22.
witch Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I wanted to call my son Ieuan, Ianto or Iestyn but I wasn't allowed. He is Rhys which was again very rare at the time but more common now. At least it is spelled correctly though. The problem with Ioan, @Oaktech is that the teachers wont be able to pronounce it!

I must admit though, I've always thought very foreign names sound odd with English surnames - luckily my married name is Serb and sounds vaguely Celtic so both names go very well with it

As long as he can pronounce it he can correct them! There was debate in the family about the sense of having an Owen and a Ioan in the family, until I pointed out to my mother that she gave my sister the same initials, and middle name as she has, and that both of my in-laws have phonetically the same name (Rae and Ray) Then everyone shut up!

The biggest problem with my surname is finding a forename that doesn't sound like a stage name!
