I'm actually very okay with this new start menu and if it does end up like that I have no quarrel about upgrading my PC to 8.2/9. I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with TIFKAM in of itself, the concept isn't bad and I like the idea that tiles can update, it gives them much more functionality. I just think the fullscreen, using-swipes nonsense was terrible for desktop and laptop users.. On Win8 tablets it's surprisingly intuitive and I've found no trouble at all with it, even though I only got my hands on a Win8 tablet for the first time 2 days ago, I've had no trouble. In fact, desktop mode has given me more trouble due to the resolution, a lot of things you need to click on are a bit too small for my fingers.

I've got 3 monitors at home and at work, still massively want it though I just hope it's dead simple to transition between them, and not some stupid edge of screen snap function (much much much perfer to press a button!)

gshaw Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 It's took two years and a couple of failed releases but MS have finally figures out the blindingly obvious and given people choice to use the OS as they want rather than as they're told. In an ideal world I prefer the Start Screen on boot but then the Start Menu once in desktop mode, although can see why that needs to be a choice in order to keep consistency.

On a tablet perhaps but on a desktop/laptop I can't seen a single reason you'd ever want to use the start screen now you can run metro apps in windowed mode and.... Actually I've complained enough about windows 8 so I'm not going to make the effort to criticise its UI design anymore. Suffice to say even after using it daily since release I feel virtually every UI element MS introduced in Windows 8 (Start screen, Charm Bar, Hot corners, Metro Apps, Metro UI) was badly implemented and flat out broken in some cases. Looks like Windows 9 seems to have addressed at least some of these issues ... Edited September 13, 2014 by flyinghaggis
gshaw Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 (edited) I do like the live tiles for news, social media etc. as a first point of contact on boot and having run 8.1 on desktop for a while kinda got used to it now. That said given the difficulties it could cause going back to desktop mode wouldn't be a problem, the jump lists would be worth the change! Funny enough the only Modern UI app I find worthwhile is OneNote and that works best full screen Edited September 13, 2014 by gshaw
